Five Augustana Wrestlers Named to Div. II All-Academic Teams

Augustana wrestlers Marcus Edgington, Nate Herda, Jay Sherer, Al Meger, and Matt Morris were named to one of the three 2009-10 Div. II All-Academic Wrestling teams, the NCAA Div. II Wrestling Coaches Association announced today.

Edgington, Herda, and Sherer were named to the first team while Meger earned second team honors. Morris was named honorable mention. In addition, the Vikings were named to the list of Div. II All-Academic teams.

In order for a student-athlete to be nominated for this honor, he needed to have a minimum 3.00 cumulative grade point average on a 4.0 scale. He must also be in at least his second full year at his school, be a varsity member on his team of a key reserve, demonstrate a degree of skill and have a minimum of two letters of recommendation (academic advisor and coach) submitted on his behalf.

Edgington wrestled his way to the Div. II National Championships this season, where he finished fourth at 157 pounds, earning All-American honors. He is double majoring in physics and Spanish and boasts the highest GPA on the Augie team at 3.62.

Herda also finished fourth at nationals, wrestling at 149 pounds. He lost in the semi-finals before battling his way back and eventually losing in the fourth place match. He also earned All-American honors and is majoring in exercise science.

Sherer won the Div. II National Championship at 141 pounds, beating his opponent 3-1. He scored a takedown with just one second left in a sudden victory period. He is Augustana's first national champion since 2005 and is an All-American. He is majoring in biology.

Meger also qualified for the national meet, where he posted a 1-2 record at 125 pounds. He is double majoring in business administration and psychology.

Morris was a key reserve for Augustana at 165. He posted an 18-7 record on the season and is majoring in excercise science.

As a team the Vikings posted the eighth-highest team GPA in Div. II with a 3.196.
