The Augustana women's tennis team picked up two important conference victories, defeating MSU Moorhead 9-0 and Upper Iowa 7-2 Saturday night in Minneapolis, Minn.
The wins improved the Vikings' record to 13-0 on the season. The Vikings also improved to 6-0 in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference action, moving into a tie for first place with St. Cloud State.
The dual against Upper Iowa was a matchup of two regionally-ranked teams. Augustana entered the dual ranked 10th in the Central Region, while UIU is ranked third.
Augustana took a 2-1 lead in the doubles matches.
Michelle Wadas and
Hannah Gebauer won their No. 2 doubles match against Mallery Cox and Kelsey Montgomery 8-4. At No. 3 singles,
Emily Johnson teamed up with
Gabrielle Kachena to earn an 8-4 win over Courtney Romer and Nicole Henry.
Upper Iowa captured the No. 1 doubles match where Anastasia Dabiza and Betsy Limburg slipped past Augie's duo of
Brittany Gaster and
Adrienne Conley by an 8-6 score.
Augustana put the dual away by winning five of the six singles matches. Gaster earned the biggest win as she knocked off Dabiza 6-4, 1-6, 10-8. Dabiza entered the match ranked No. 1 in the region and No. 42 in the nation in singles.
At No. 5 singles, Conley won a first set tiebreaker to record a 7-6 (3), 6-2 win over Montgomery. Also victorious were Gebauer at No. 3 singles,
Jill Hagestuen at No. 4 singles and Johnson at No. 6 singles.
Earlier in the day, the Vikings easily dispatched MSU Moorhead. After winning all three doubles matches to take a 3-0 lead, Augustana controlled the singles matches as well. The only match which saw a Viking drop a set came at No. 4 singles, where Hagestuen edged past Alyse Grelson 6-1, 0-6, 10-6.
Aside from that match, no Viking dropped more than 4 games in a set.
Augustana concludes its weekend trip to Minneapolis with a conference dual against Winona State, ranked seventh in the region, at 3 p.m.
