After two grueling matches of tennis this weekend, the Augustana women's tennis team still had enough left to handle Southwest Minnesota State on Monday. The Vikings beat the Mustangs 7-2 in Marshall, Minn.
The Vikings (17-0, 9-0 NSIC), who are just one win away from finishing a spotless regular season, only suffered one loss in singles competition, with three Vikings taking their matches in straight sets. This week's NSIC Player of the Week,
Michelle Wadas, kept her winning streak alive, prevailing over Danielle Hildebrandt at No.2 doubles 6-2, 6-1.
Recording wins in the tie-breakers were
Brittany Gaster at No. 1 singles and
Hannah Gebauer at No. 3 singles. Gaster took down Lissa Murakami, rallying after losing the first set 4-6 to dominate the next two sets, 6-0 and 10-1.
Gebauer also lost her first set to Cailey Grupe 2-6, but fought back to win 6-3 in the second set and take the tie-breaker 10-5.
In doubles, Gaster and
Adrienne Conley handled the No. 1 doubles pair of Trisha Baldwin and Grupe, 8-3.
Wadas and Gebauer did not fare as well at No. 2 doubles and were beat 8-6 by Murakami and Danielle Hildebrandt.
The pair of
Emily Johnson and
Gabrielle Kachena took a close one off of Amy Daniels and Angie Wiegmann, winning 8-6 in No. 3 doubles.
Before meeing up with the Vikings, SMSU (8-8, 4-5 NSIC) was on a five-match winning streak.
Head coach
Marc Kurtz was proud of the way the team played after playing two matches just days ago.
"It was a good overall team effort," Kurtz said. "Everyone played and fought hard after such a long weekend of tennis."
He explained that the team is happy with the win today but knows the season isn't over and they will have to continue to fight to acheive their goals.
The Vikings will play their final regular-season match against Northern State on Sunday in Aberdeen, S.D. Match begins at 4 p.m.
