The Augustana women's tennis team suffered its first loss of the season Sunday at the NSIC Women's Tennis Championships in Minneapolis, Minn. The Vikings fell 5-2 in the finals to St. Cloud State.
Augie (20-1) didn't drop a set on its way to the championship, beating Minnesota Duluth and Minnesota State 5-0 in the quarterfinal and semifinal rounds. However, St. Cloud State (22-6), whom the Vikings beat in the regular season, was too tough for Augustana on Sunday.
The Huskies won two out of the three doubles matches.
Hannah Gebauer and
Michelle Wadas fell in the No. 2 doubles match to Catarina Franca and Kayla Lenz 8-4. The No. 3 doubles match was a close one with
Emily Johnson and
Gabrielle Kachena narrowly losing 9-7 to Samantha Boushek and Tanya Halloran.
The victory came at No. 1 singles, where
Brittany Gaster and
Adrienne Conley outlasted the tandem of Jacquelyn Doll and Kelly Freese, 9-8 with the tiebreaker going 7-2.
The Vikings then lost three singles matches to give the Huskies five wins and stop the match.
The only singles win for Augie came from
Adrienne Conley at No. 6 singles, who beat Tanya Halloran 6-3, 6-2.
Emily Johnson was leading Samantha Boushek 6-3, 2-6, 4-2 at No. 5 singles when the match was called.
The Huskies now automatically qualify for the NCAA Central Regional Tournament while the Vikings, who are currently the No. 1 seed in the region, will wait until Wednesday to find out if they make the cut.
Regionals are May 6-8 at a location yet to be determined.
