Vikings perform well at USD Invite

FINAL RESULTS

VERMILLION, S.D. - Augustana had a solid showing at the University of South Dakota Invite on Saturday, highlighted by Andrea Whitney's provisional leap of 5 feet, 6 inches in the women's high jump.

Whitney, who is the second Augustana high jumper to hit the provisional mark (5 feet, 5.75 inches) this season, was one of two Vikings to capture first-place finishes; Aduo Omot won the men's 800-meter run in 1:54.80.

Four Augustana athletes earned runner-up finishes on the day.

For the women, Anne Parsley was second in the 400-meter dash, checking in at 1:00.29. LeAnn Severson took second in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:21.63. Hollie Bloom cleared 11 feet, 3.75 inches in the pole vault for runner-up honors.

For the men, Diego Oquendo took second in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8.31 seconds.

The women also had a host of other notable performances. Karmen Nyberg took fourth in the 200-meter dash, clocking in at 26.55 seconds. Alyssa Schmidt's time of 2:30.16 in the 800-meter run was good for seventh place. The Vikings also had a pair of relay teams place in the 4 by 400-meter relay; the top Augustana team was third (4:05.66), while the other foursome was fourth (4:12.10).

In the field events, Katie Guse, who has already hit the provisional mark in the women's high jump, took fourth by clearing 5 feet, 4.25 inches. Colleen Everson earned sixth-place honors in the long jump with a leap of 17 feet, 3.5 inches, while Mary-Kathryn Tonner was ninth (16 feet, 9.75 inches).

Kirsten Noska (34 feet, 3.5 inches) and Everson (34 feet, 3 inches) were sixth- and seventh-place finishers, respectively, in the women's triple jump. Noel Bentele was fourth in the shot put (41 feet, 1 inch) and sixth in the weight throw (50 feet, 11.5 inches).

For the men, Oquendo also had a solid performance in the 60-meter dash, picking up a fifth-place finish with a time of 7.06 seconds.

In the 400-meter dash, Matt Winder (52.32 seconds) and Aaron Bauer (53.37 seconds) were sixth and 10th, respectively.

Clint Freiheit joined Omot in the top 10 of the men's 800-meter run with a time of 2:07.07--good for 10th place.

Augustana's men's 4 by 400-meter relay team was third in 3:29.51.

The Vikings had three in the top 10 of the high jump as Blake Ridgeway (6 feet, 2 inches) tied for fourth, Jacob Pohlmann (6 feet, 2 inches) tied for sixth and Cory Sugden (6 feet, 2 inches) took eighth.

Pohlman was also ninth in the pole vault (12 feet, 5.5 inches).

Dylan Buehler collected seventh place in the men's weight throw with a toss of 44 feet, 8.75 inches.

The Vikings return to action next Saturday at the Jack Johnson Invite in Minneapolis.
