Augustana closes fall season in Michigan

This week
Augustana wraps up the fall part of the 2011-12 season this Saturday and Sunday in Allendale, Mich., at the Laker Fall Classic.

Laker Fall Classic
The Laker Fall Classic is hosted by Grand Valley State at the Meadows.  The Vikings placed second last season at the tournament, falling in behind Southern Florida.

Last time out
Augustana wrapped up the fall part of the NSIC Championship holding a 40-stroke lead and owning the top-three individuals.  The Vikings finished Oct. 9 with a two-round total of 613 at the Jewel Golf Course in Lake City, Minn., while Maggie Leland and Allie Ostrander are tied for first, and Emily Kvidera is in third.  The NSIC Championship includes two rounds in the fall season and two rounds in the spring.  Minnesota State is in second with a 653.  Leland and Ostrander both sit at 4-over-par 148.  Ostrander entered the day in sole possession of the top spot, while Leland was in second.  But a 1-under performance by Leland on Sunday lifted her into the leader position with her teammate.  Ostrander carded a 76 on Sunday after shooting even par Saturday.  Emily Kvidera retained her third-place position.  She is at 11-over 155 through two rounds.  Jordan Price is tied for eighth with an 18-over 162.  Jennifer Benoy is tied for 16th after shooting a 23-over 167.

More NSIC honors
For the third time this season, the NSIC named Augustana's Maggie Leland its golfer of the week on Oct. 11.  Leland has been named NSIC Golfer of the Week three times this season and six times during her two-year career.

Sept. 27 Maggie Leland

All but one
With the weekly NSIC awards nearly done for the fall season, Augustana can say it has had an athlete earn golfer of the week honors 80 percent of the time thus far.  Of the five awards handed out so far in 2011-12, the Vikings have earned four of them.  Maggie Leland is a three-time winner, while Allie Ostrander garnered the honor once.

Defending champs
A 40 stroke lead after the NSIC Championship has the Vikings well on their way to defending their NSIC Championship.  Augustana is the two-time defending conference champion and has won a total of three conference titles in the program's history.  All three titles have come under head coach Peggy Kirby.

Well traveled
Augustana will be making a trip to its fourth different state outside of South Dakota this weekend when the Vikings play in Michigan.  So far this fall season, the Vikings have traveled to Minnesota, Missouri and Nebraska.  The spring slate includes a trek west to California.

Three's company
The top three golfers from the NSIC--in regard to stroke average--are from Augustana.  Maggie Leland leads the NSIC with a 74.6 average, Allie Ostrander is second at 76.5 and Emily Kvidera is third at 77.0.

Get low
Maggie Leland owns the three lowest rounds in the NSIC this season.  She has turned in rounds of 70, 71 and 72 this fall.  Teammate Allie Ostrander is tied with her fellow sophomore for the third lowest round of 72.  As a team, the Vikings have shot the nine lowest rounds in the conference this fall.  Augustana's best round in 2011-12 is a 299 it shot during the first round of the Southwest Minnesota State Mustang Invitational on Sept. 24.

Nationally ranked
Augustana was ranked 10th in the preseason Division II coaches' poll published in the Sept. 5 issue of GolfWorld.  The Vikings received 239 points in the poll.  Florida Southern was No. 1.

Fall frenzy
Augustana has a total of seven contests on the fall slate, including the first two rounds of the NSIC Championship. A year ago, the Vikings won all but one of their fall tournaments.

We're back
Five golfers return from Augustana's 2010-11 squad. All-NSIC picks Emily Kvidera and Maggie Leland are part of the incumbent group, while Central Region medalist Allie Ostrander is also back. Other returners include Molly Leland and Jennifer Benoy.

New faces
The Vikings welcome three new athletes to the roster for 2011-12. Chelsea Cadwell transferred from Division I Missouri-Kansas City and is a senior. Jordan Price is the lone freshman on the squad; she prepped at Byron High School in Minnesota.

A look back
Augustana won seven tournament titles in 2010-11, including the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Championship and Central Region Championship. The Vikings were ninth-place finishers at the NCAA Championship.

Coaches corner
Peggy Kirby enters her ninth season as the leader of Augustana women's golf. A three-time conference coach of the year, Kirby has coached three conference medalists and four All-America selections. She is assisted by longtime friend Patty Coddington.
