MONMOUTH, Ore. - Double-figure scoring efforts from four different players helped No. 16 Augustana register a 70-54 victory over Saint Martin's (Wash.) Friday evening at the Western Oregon/Phoenix Inn D2 Shootout on the campus of Western Oregon in Monmouth, Ore.
Augustana improves to 2-0. SMU drops to 0-3.
Cameron McCaffrey, an Oregon native making his collegiate debut in his home state, led the Vikings with 13 points.
Drae Murray,
Cody Schilling and
Leif Nomeland each added 10.
Eric Jorgensen just missed double figures with eight points.
The Vikings were relentless on the boards, outrebounding the Saints 41-30.
Derrick De Zeeuw paced Augustana with nine rebounds, while Nomeland grabbed seven.
Augustana, which shot 53.2 percent in its win against the University of Sioux Falls Tuesday, again compiled a precision effort from the field, shooting 47.6 percent (30 of 63).
The Vikings trailed just once in the contest--after SMU scored the opening bucket two minutes in.
With eight minutes left in the first half, Augustana used an 8-2 run to earn its first double-figure lead of the half. Points from
Yuriy Malashenko, Schilling, McCaffrey,
Brennan Olson and Murray put the Vikings ahead 27-14 with five minutes to go before the break.
Augustana held a 29-18 advantage at halftime.
A small surge by SMU early in the second half had the Saints within single digits multiple times during the first nine minutes, but six unanswered points--four of which came on easy buckets by Murray--gave the Vikings a 59-42 lead with 5:47 remaining.
From there, Augustana kept the Saints at a comfortable distance. The closest difference in the final six minutes was 13 points at the 2:29 mark.
A Nomeland dunk with 1:27 on the clock put the finishing touch on the Viking victory.
Augustana received 23 points off the bench, highlighted by Jorgensen's eight and complimented by another five from Olson.
The Vikings will play Western Oregon, the host school, tomorrow at 7:30 p.m. CDT.
