Augustana splits with Colorado School of Mines

GOLDEN, Colo. - Augustana split its doubleheader with the Colorado School of Mines on Sunday in Golden, Colo., falling 13-7 in Game 1 and winning 17-10 in Game 2.

Augustana moves to 3-1, while CSM is now 2-6.

The Vikings' win in Game 2 was opened up by a 10-run fifth inning. The contest was locked at 7-7 heading into the fifth.

Nate Baumann compiled a 4 for 5 performance and collected four RBIs, while Drew Heithoff finished 2 for 4 with four RBIs.

Casey Jacobson notched his first win of the season. He worked 2.0 innings and struckout one battter. Tyson Gau and Bret Severtson each logged 2.0 innings, striking out four and two batters, respectively.

The Vikings filled the two opening innings with five runs, using seven hits--including a double from Baumann--to lead 5-0 heading into the bottom of the second.

CSM, though, answered with five runs in the bottom half of the frame to even the game at 5-5.

The Orediggers added two runs in the third, while the Vikings answered with a pair of runs in the fourth to again knot the contest, this time at 7-7. Doubles from Baumann and Tony Viger drove in runs for Augustana.

The Vikings unloaded 10 runs in the fifth. Doubles from Heithoff and Gates cook highlighted the Augustana surge.

CSM sprinkled in two runs in the bottom half of the inning, but the Vikings grip on the lead was firm enough to last the final inning, which went scoreless.

Charlie Dubanoski, Viger and Heithoff each had two hits in Augustana's Game 1 loss.

The Vikings led 4-1 heading into the bottom of the seventh, but CSM knocked in nine runs in the bottom of the frame to steal the victory.

Both teams scored three runs apiece in the final two innings of play.

Augustana used four different pitchers in the loss; Grant Larson tossed just 0.1 innings but gave up five runs (three earned) and was tagged with the loss. Deryk Marks started and threw 6.0 innings, striking out two and allowing just one run.

The Vikings will travel to Topeka, Kan., next week to play Nebraska-Omaha in a pair of doubleheaders.
