Vikings, Gau earn split at No. 20 Cameron

LAWTON, Okla. - Tyson Gau threw a complete game and struckout 11 batters to lead Augustana to a 5-2 win over No. 20 Cameron in Game 2 and help the Vikings salvage a doubleheader split on Monday afternoon in Lawton, Okla. CU defeated Augustana 11-5 in Game 1.

Augustana moves to 7-6, while CU is now 15-8.

Gau (1-2) tossed all 7.0 innings in Game 2 and allowed two runs to pick up his first win of the season. His 11 strikeouts is a season high for Augustana

Kye Winter led the Viking offense with a 2-for-3 outing at the dish. He also drove in three runs and knocked his first career home run. Nate Baumann—who also had a homer—and Derek Hansen each added an RBI.

The Vikings scored their five runs in Game 2 in the final five innings.

Winter's two-out single in the fifth drove in two runs and gave Augustana a 2-1 lead, while Baumann homered in the sixth to push the Viking advantage to 3-1.

Augustana added two more in the seventh after Jose Martinez singled to lead off the inning and Hansen followed with an RBI double. Hansen was thrown out trying to steal second, but Winter slammed a home run to answer and give his team a 5-1 cushion.

CU's Nate Valdez managed a solo homer in the seventh, but Gau fanned the final three batters to close the game.

In Game 1, CU scored seven runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to erase a 6-4 tie. Five Viking errors aided the Aggie win.

Deryk Marks finished 3 for 4 in Game 1 and had two RBIs. Nate Hewes had two home runs and went 2 for 3.

Hansen (1-1) gave up 10 hits and 11 runs in the loss. Just four of those runs were earned. He struckout five.

The Vikings were owners of a 1-0 lead after the first thanks to a Marks solo home run. Nate Hewes homered in the third to push the Augustana lead to 2-0.

CU doused the third and fourth innings with two runs apiece to knot the contest at 4-4 heading into the fifth.

Hewes led off with a home run for Augustana in the top of the fifth, and Nate Baumann singled and scored a run to close the inning.

The Aggies' seven-run fifth inning came on six hits and one Viking error. CU logged a home run, a triple and two doubles to move ahead 11-4.

Marks and Drew Heithoff singles scored one run for the Vikings in the final inning.

Baumann's home run in Game 2 moved the senior closer to becoming the all-time leader in the category at Augustana. He has 38 and is just two away from tying Brad Bornhorst's career mark of 40.

Augustana and CU will finish this four-game series with a doubleheader tomorrow at 1 p.m.
