LAWTON, Okla. - Cameron used a walk-off single in Game 1 and broke away from a 9-9 tie in Game 2 to complete a doubleheader sweep of Augustana by winning 9-8 and 10-9 Tuesday afternoon in Lawton, Okla.
CU, which fell out of the latest national rankings today, improves to 17-8, while Augustana moves to 7-8.
The Aggies and Vikings split in yesterday's doubleheader.
Drew Heithoff's stolen base in the third inning of Game 1 was the 73rd of his career--passing Pete Roback's (1993-1996) mark of 72 career stolen bases for the top spot in the Augustana record book.
CU's Josh Dawson hit a walk-off single to score Taylor Lyons from third and lift the Aggies to a 9-8, eight-inning win over Augustana in Game 1.
The Vikings and Aggies were tied 8-8 heading into the eighth, and after a scoreless bottom half of the frame by Augustana, CU immediately pounced on an opportunity to end the game.
Lyons tripled to lead off, and Dawson pushed him in on his ensuing at bat.
Augustana, though, found itself in the extra-inning scenario after giving up two runs in the seventh after holding an 8-6 lead. A Joe Halley home run for CU in what could have been the final inning of play pushed the contest to extra innings.
Bret Severtson took the loss for the Vikings. The senior entered in the sixth inning to close and nearly had his third save of the season in hand until Halley's bomb and Lyons' triple to lead off the eighth. He tossed 2.0 innings.
Deryk Marks made the start and threw 5.0 innings, giving up four earned runs and striking out three.
Kenny Lidke entered in the eighth and gave up Dawson's walk-off single.
Charlie Dubanoski finished 2 for 3 with two RBIs. The Vikings also got a home run from
Brian Voigt.
Augustana held a 2-0 advantage after three innings. The Vikings posted three in the third after
Nate Hewes and Heithoff drew walks and scored on a Dubanoski single.
Voigt homered to lead off the fourth, but CU managed two runs in the bottom half of the inning to make it a 3-2 contest.
The Vikings unloaded five runs in the fifth--thanks to a pair of stolen bases from
Nate Baumann, singles from Voigt and
Kye Winter and a pair of Aggie errors.
But CU poured in four runs on three hits in the fifth to cut the deficit to 8-6. After a scoreless fifth, the Aggies put together their game-tying, two-run seventh inning and finished the rally in the eighth.
In Game 2, CU scored a run in the bottom of the sixth to neutralize a 9-9 tie and decisively move ahead 10-9.
Nate Alfson went 3 for 4 with five RBIs for the Vikings. He hit two home runs in the Augustana loss.
Voigt suffered the loss on the hill for Augustana. He worked the final 2.0inning and gave up one run on two hits to move to 0-1 on the season.
Bennett Johnson tossed the first 4.0 innings and gave up nine runs on nine hits.
The two teams were knotted at 3-3 after three innings of play. The Vikings added four more to their total in the fourth after a two-RBI double from Marks and a two-run homer from Alfson.
The Aggies, however, knocked in sixth runs in the bottom half of the inning to take a 9-7 lead.
Another two-run home run by Alfson in the sixth tied it at 9-9, but Kenny Held slammed a solo homer in the sixth to put his Aggies back in the lead 10-9.
The Vikings were retired in order in the seventh.
Augustana will open Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference play on Saturday and Sunday with a four-game home series with Minnesota, Crookston. Both doubleheaders are scheduled for a noon start at Ronken Field.
