Vikings in California over Spring Break

Vikings in California over Spring Break

This week: Augustana is in California for its Spring Break trip and will scrimmage Redlands on Thursday in Beaumont, Calif., and take part in the Lady Otter Invitational hosted by Cal State Monterey Bay on Monday and Tuesday in Seaside, Calif.

Last time out: Augustana holds a 46-stroke lead over the next conference team at the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Championship after carding a second-round score of 307 on Oct. 10 for a two-day total of 615. The Vikings also own the top three individuals in Maggie Leland, Emily Kvidera and Molly Leland, who are in first, second and third, respectively. The first two rounds were played at the Hillcrest Country Club in St. Paul, Minn.; the final two rounds of the tournament will be completed this spring.  Augustana is 46 strokes better than Concordia University, St. Paul (661) and 49 better than Minnesota State (664). The Vikings won the Championship last season.  The Vikings' commanding advantage is the result of balanced play. All of Augustana's golfers are in the top 10.  To view the current standings in the NSIC Championship, click here.  The final two rounds will played at the Brandon Golf Course on April 22 and 23.

Who's back: The Vikings return seven golfers from last year's squad that was the Northern Sun Intercollegiate and region champion and placed 10th at the NCAA Championship. Jennifer Benoy, Kelsey Bortnem, Emily Holck, Emily Kvidera, Molly Leland, Kelli Lowry and Kate Tobin are all back for Augustana.

Newcomers: Three fresh faces round out the 2010-11 roster for the Vikings. Ashley Hendricks, Maggie Leland and Alli Ostrander --all true freshmen--are this season's newcomers.

Vikings add one for 2011-12: Augustana head women's golf coach Peggy Kirby announced Nov. 18 that Byron, Minn., native Jordan Price has signed a letter of intent to continue her academic and athletic career at Augustana beginning in 2011-12.

Looking back: It was one of the most successful seasons in Augustana women's golf history in 2009-10. The Vikings captured the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference and Super Region 3 championships and placed 10th at the NCAA Championships. Augustana also owned the NSIC's Newcomer of the Year in Emily Kvidera, who was the conference medalist. Head coach Peggy Kirby also picked NSIC Coach of the Year honors. The Vikings had two All-NSIC first team picks as Kvidera and Kate Tobin each earned that accolade.

Coaches' corner: Peggy Kirby returns for her eighth season as the leader of Vikings' women golf. She was named the NSIC Coach of the Year last season after leading her squad to the conference title. Kirby is assisted by long-time friend Patty Coddington.
