Gaster, Kurtz earn NSIC awards; four Vikings named All-Conference

Gaster, Kurtz earn NSIC awards; four Vikings named All-Conference

BURNSVILLE, Minn. – The Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference announced Wednesday that Brittany Gaster has been named its Senior of the Year and Marc Kurtz has been named its Coach of the Year. Four Vikings were also named All-NSIC.

Gaster, the 2010 NSIC Player of the Year, was voted by the league coaches as the NSIC Senior of the Year. Gaster held an 8-6 overall record and a 7-3 mark in conference play at number one singles. She finished the season winning six of her last eight matches, including her last four. Gaster was also named NSIC Player of the Week on April 13th.

Kurtz, in his third season, was voted by his peers as NSIC Coach of the Year for the second consecutive year after guiding the Vikings to a 20-2 record and a perfect 11-0 mark in the NSIC. The Viking won the NSIC regular season championship with a perfect record for the second straight season and won the NSIC Tournament Championship to earn an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.

Gaster and Katie Jesperson made the singles All-NSIC first team and were also named doubles first team.

Jesperson finished the season an undefeated 22-0 and was 11-0 in conference play. She played primarily No. 2 singles for the Vikings and won all four of her matches in the NSIC Tournament to help the Vikings to win the title.

The duo teamed up at No. 1 doubles for an overall record of 12-4 (8-2 NSIC). Gaster and Jesperson have won 11 straight matches.

Hannah Gebauer earned singles All-NSIC honorable mention honors with a flawless overall record of 18-0 (9-0 NSIC). While playing primarily No. 4 singles, Gebauer has blanked her opponent by a score of 6-0, 6-0 four times on the season.

Gebauer and Michelle Wadas were named doubles All-NSIC honorable mention. The pair holds an overall record of 15-4 and they are10-1 in conference play at primarily No. 2 doubles. Gebauer and Wadas have won their last eight matches.

Augustana is automatically qualified to play in the 2011 NCAA Division II Women's Central Regional Tournament. First and second rounds are scheduled for May 1 and 2 or May 2 and 3 at a location to be determined.
