Augustana blanks No. 14 St. Cloud State in Game 1; Game 2 suspended

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. - Nate Baumann become Augustana's all-time leader in hits and doubles as his Vikings defeated No. 14-ranked St. Cloud State 9-0 in Game 1 of a conference doubleheader Friday afternoon. Game 2 was suspended after six innings due to darkness with SCSU holding a 6-2 lead.

Augustana improves to 22-15 (14-7 NSIC); SCSU falls to 26-7 (14-5 NSIC).

Baumann finished 3 for 4 with four RBIs, including belting a solo homer in the first inning. He became Augustana's all-time hits leader with his home run, passing Gary Walz's mark of 238. At his next at bat, Baumann hit a double to eclipse the previous career record of 44 held by Brad Bornhorst.

Nate Alfson also went 2 for 3 with three RBIs in the Viking win.

Tyson Gau (5-3) tossed the complete-game shutout for Augustana. He struck out three while allowing five hits.

Baumann led off the bottom of the first with his home run, sparking a three-run inning for the Vikings. Brandon Jasper would drive in a run with a fielder's choice, and Alfson's single one batter later scored another.

Nate Hewes knocked in a double to start the bottom of the second and later scored when Baumann doubled down the left-field line.

The Vikings found another five runs in the fourth, riding three hits in the surge. Baumann launched a two-RBI single to left field to begin scoring in the inning, while Deryk Marks used a sacrifice fly to score Baumann. Alfson extended the Viking lead to 9-0 after his two-RBI single.

Nick Anderson (6-1) took his first loss of the year on the mound for SCSU. He tossed 3.1 innings, giving up all nine runs.

Game 2 was suspended due to darkness after six innings. The Huskies held a 6-2 advantage in the contest, which will resume tomorrow at noon. The scheduled doubleheader for Saturday will begin following the conclusion of Game 2.
