SPRINGFIELD, Mo. - Augustana raced out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning and made it stick Sunday against Drury, topping the Panthers 6-3.
Augustana improves to 2-3, while DU falls to 7-5.
The Vikings and Panthers split yesterday's doubleheader.
Tyson Gau (1-0) tossed 5.0 shutout innings in his first start and appearance of the season. He allowed just three hits.
Zach Weinandt (3.2 innings) and
Brian Voigt (0.1 inning) finished the game.
Kye Winter went registered three RBIs and a hit.
Brian Knight finished 2 for 3, and
Derek Hansen was 2 for 4 with an RBI.
DU used six pitchers. Starter Tyler Abma (0-1) gave up three runs on three hits to take the loss.
Winter drove in two of Augustana's three runs in the opening frame on a double. The hit scored Knight, who led off the game with a walk, and
David Borchardt, who singled from the No. 2 spot.
Tony Viger's sacrifice fly scored Winter two batters later.
Both squads were quiet until the fifth inning when the Vikings got an RBI double from Hansen, which pushed in Knight.
Augustana led 5-0 until the bottom of the sixth inning. DU used a trio of singles to eventually score its first run of the game.
Knight tripled to start the seventh inning and quickly scored when Winter reached on a fielder's choice. Viger later singled to drive in another run for a 6-1 Augustana advantage.
Four hits by DU in the final inning scored two runs. Voigt took care of the final out by striking out Alex Nixon.
Winter, Hansen and
Jose Martinez all had doubles for Augustana, while Knight's triple was the first this season by a Viking.
Augustana will host the University of Sioux Falls on Wednesday at 4 p.m. for a single game.
