BEMIDJI, Minn. - Augustana's
Nate Hewes registered three hits and had an RBI in a 7-2 win over Bemidji State Saturday afternoon, helping the Vikings to a split with the Beavers, who took the nightcap 7-5.
Augustana moves to 18-11 (13-5 NSIC). BSU is now 15-15 (8-8 NSIC).
Hewes was one of four Vikings to post multi-hit performances in the opening game.
Ryan Burmeister went 2 for 4 with one RBI,
Brian Knight finished 2 for 3 and
Derek Hansen went 2 for 4.
Ben Heairet (3-1) tossed 6.0 innings and struck out six in the win. He allowed two runs on four hits.
Zach Weinandt finished the final inning.
Logan Kalis put together a 2-for-4 outing for BSU and did the Beavers' only scoring on a two-run homer in the bottom of the first inning. Phil Bray (7-2) gave up four runs on eight hits in a losing effort.
Trailing 2-0 heading into the second, the Vikings used a two-out, RBI singles from Hewes and
David Borchardt to even the game at 2-2.
Augustana sprinkled in a run each in the fourth and fifth to stretch its lead to 4-2. Hewes plated a run in the fourth after singling to lead off the inning and eventually taking home when Hansen got caught in a rundown trying to steal second. Burmeister singled in the fifth to score another run.
Three BSU wild pitches allowed three Augustana runs to score between the sixth and seventh innings.
In Game 2, the Beavers used a two-run seventh inning to erase a 5-3 Viking lead and salvage a split.
Miles Campbell (2-3) threw 3.2 shutout innings in relief to earn the win. Juan Molero had two RBIs in a 2-for-4 outing for the Beavers.
Derek Quame (1-1) gave up three runs in 3.1 innings of work to take the loss.
Hansen blasted a solo home run and finished 3 for 4. Knight tallied two RBIS, and
Ben Ludwigson was 2 for 2 with an RBI.
BSU had built itself a 3-0 lead by the fifth inning, but a Knight double in the top of the frame resulted in a pair of Augustana runs.
The Vikings took the lead in the sixth with three runs. Hansen christened the inning with his homer and was one of three to get hits as Augustana moved ahead 5-3.
The Beavers charted five hits across the sixth, seventh and eighth innings to push in four runs and earn a comeback win.
Augustana and BSU will play another doubleheader Sunday at noon.
