Augustana breaks three meet records; Vikings win six events at Sioux City Relays

SIOUX CITY, Iowa
– Augustana set three meet records and won six events at the Sioux City Relays, an event that took place Friday and Saturday.

Tom Karbo keyed the Vikings' performance on the day, winning two events; the 1,500-meter run and the 3,000-meter steeplechase. In the 1,500 meters, Karbo ran a time of 3:55.85. Henrik Hansson finished second in 3:56.07. In the 3,000-meter steeplechase, Karbo set a new meet record, clocking in at 8:57.61 to provisionally qualify for nationals.     

Runa Falch turned in a time of 4:33.84 to record a meet record and win the women's 1,500-meter run. The time provisionally qualifies her for the national meet. 

Kyle Blakeslee also set a meet record after winning the women's 3,000-meter steeplechase with a provisional qualifying time of 10:41.76.

Aduo Omot won the 800-meter run in 1:52.15.

Travis Beniak, who ran unattached in the 3,000-meter steeplechase, finished third in a time of 9:05.43.  His time also bettered the old meet record. Adam Braun placed fourth in 9:12.34.

Four other Vikings captured second-place finishes. Kristin Brondbo in the 1,500 (4:42.29), Katie Tonner in the 400-meter hurdles (1:04.24), Katie Guse in the high jump (5 feet, 6 inches) and Augustana men's A distance medley relay team (10:21.54). Guse's mark is provisional.

Tonner also placed seventh in 15.89 seconds during the 100-meter hurdles.

Andrea Whitney leaped 5 feet, 4.25 inches in the high jump to finish third.

Gathin Veldhuizen sprinted a time of 15.19 seconds to place third in the men's 110-meter hurdles.

Besides Omot, Henrik Hansson and Khor Kong also turned in impressive finishes in the men's 800 meters. Hansson placed fourth in 1:54.91 and Khor Kong finished fifth in 1:55.85.

Augustana women's 4X800 meter relay team made up of LeAnn Severson, Molly Kokesh, Megan Erspamer and Kelly Kougl placed fourth in 9:30.60.

A pair of Augustana 5,000-meter runners recorded top-eight finishes on the day. Maddy Jourgensen was fourth in 18:16.38, while Megan Brown was seventh in 18:24.62.

Finishing fifth in the men's DMR was Augustana's B relay squad in 10:54.56.

Augustana women's 4X200-meter relay team consisting of Meagan Grandgenett, Kirsten Nyberg, Katie Guse and Karmen Nyberg ran 1:47.21 to earn seventh.

Mary Hitchcock clocked in at 1:06.71 in the 400-meter hurdles, placing sixth. Also placing sixth was Malik Glass in the 100-meter hurdles (11.13 seconds).

Paul Mallory was eighth in the 400-meter hurdles (56.24).

Augustana competes at two meets in the upcoming week. The Mount Sac Relays from April 19 to 21 and the Northwestern Invitational on April 21.
