BEMIDJI, Minn. - Augustana scored 22 runs and collected 10-6 and 12-1 (eight innings) wins over Bemidji State Sunday in a Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference doubleheader.
Augustana improves to 20-11 (15-5 NSIC), while BSU falls to 15-17 (8-10 NSIC).
The Vikings rattled off 14 hits in an abbreviated Game 2 and got two-RBI games from
Jack Goihl,
Troy Pilkington,
Jake Kurth and
Ryan Burmeister.
Goihl went 2 for 4 and slammed his team-best sixth home run, Pilkington finished 2 for 3, Kurth was 1 for 4 and Burmeister went 1 for 3.
Brian Knight and
Nate Hewes logged multi-hit games, posting three and two hits, respectively.
Brian Voigt (1-1) put together a strong outing on the mound, going 7.0 innings and allowing one run on six hits while striking out six.
Grant Larson fanned one as he closed the final inning of the contest.
Juan Molero pushed in BSU's only run in the fourth inning, and Ryan Van Someren (1-4) gave up eight earned runs in 7.0 innings to take the loss.
Seven hits in the opening inning--highlighted by two-RBI cuts from Pilkington and Kurth--accounted for a quick 5-0 Viking lead.
Burmeister and Knight drove in two more runs in the third, affording Augustana a 7-0 advantage.
Molero punched in an RBI single for BSU in the fourth.
Another four hits, including a two-run bomb by Goihl, in the seventh plated three more runs for the Vikings. Augustana added two more in the eighth to end the game early via the 10-run rule.
The Vikings' day started with an equally impressive offensive performance in Game 1. Augustana also charted 14 hits in the opening tilt, led by Knight's 3-for-4, two-RBI production at the plate. Burmeister also drove in two runs.
Sam Gotham (2-0) pitched 4.0 innings, giving up three earned runs on three hits, to get his second win of 2012. Starter
Casey Jacobson allowed one run on two hits in his 3.0 innings.
Logan Kalis (2-5) allowed seven runs on nine hits in 4.0 innings in a losing effort.
Augustana sported a 7-1 lead after four innings. Knight's two-RBI single was part of a four-run second inning, and
Derek Hansen homered in a two-run third and drove in another run in the fourth.
The Beavers nudged back with five runs between the fifth and sixth innings to make it a 7-6 contest, but the Vikings pounded out four more hits in the seventh to post three additional runs and add insurance.
The Vikings have now won seven of their last eight games.
Augustana is at home on Tuesday, hosting Minnesota State at 1:30 p.m. in an NSIC doubleheader.
