Voigt helps Vikings to split with USF

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. - After falling to the University of Sioux Falls 6-5 in nine innings, Augustana received three RBIs and 6.0 innings on the mound from Brian Voigt to collect an 11-3 win and earn a split with the Cougars Saturday afternoon at Harmodon Park.

Augustana moves to 22-13, while USF is now 10-26.

Voigt went 3 for 4 in Game 2, including hitting a two-run homer in the seventh.  He also threw 6.0 innings and allowed just one earned run to move to 2-1 on the season.

David Borchardt finished 2 for 3 with three RBIs and a home run, and Derek Hansen went 2 for 5 and drove in a pair of runs.

Chris Nichols (1-3) gave up 13 hits and seven earned runs to take the loss for USF.

Borchardt blasted a three-run homer in the second inning add to a Viking lead, giving his team a 4-0 advantage.  USF answered with two runs in the bottom of the inning and tacked on another in the third to trim the deficit to one run.

Jake Kurth moved the Vikings ahead 5-3 in the fifth on a sacrifice fly, but Augustana would explode for six runs between the sixth and seventh frames.

Voigt and Tony Viger knocked RBI singles and Nate Hewes scored on a passed ball in the fifth.  Hansen registered an RBI single and Voigt went deep for two more in the seventh.

Hansen finished the final frame on the bump by fanning three Cougars.

In Game 1, Keith Cutler dropped in a walk-off single in the ninth to lift his team to a victory.  Cutler finished 1 for 5, while Brenndan Ward was 2 for 3 with two RBIs for USF.  Andrew Christensen (3-2) tossed 2.0 shutout innings in relief to earn the win.

Zach Weinandt (1-2) gave up one run on one hit the ninth to take the loss.  He worked the final 2.2 innings.  Starter Ben Heairet struck out six but gave up four earned runs on eight hits.

Voigt slammed a solo home run in a 3-for-5 outing, Kurth was 1 for 4 with two RBIs and Viger went 2 for 2.

The Vikings trailed 4-2 heading into the sixth, getting runs in the second and fourth frames on RBIs from Kurth.  The senior singled to score Voigt in the second and recorded an RBI groundout in the fourth.

Voigt's homer in the sixth cut the difference to 4-3, but the Cougars added another run in the bottom of the inning to return their lead to two runs.

Augustana, riding RBI singles from Hansen and Jack Goihl, tied the game at 7-7 in the seventh.  Weinandt retired the Cougars in order to force extra innings.

Cutler's walk-off single in the ninth secured the USF win.

Augustana and USF will play another doubleheader Sunday at 1 p.m. at Ronken Field.
