Augustana cross country opens season under the lights

RESULTS

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. - Augustana cross country opened the 2012 season with the second annual Augustana Twilight on Friday under the lights at Yankton Trail Park in Sioux Falls on Friday night. The meet included 11 collegiate teams and six local high school teams.

The course was illuminated by the lights on the soccer fields and the use of glow sticks. In the collegiate portion of the race, the women ran three miles and the men ran a four mile course. No team scores were kept in this meet.

Augustana's Runa Falch was the first women's collegiate runner to cross the finish line with a time of 16:26.91. Former Viking runner who competed unattached, Jillian Tholen, finished second with a time of 16:43.07.

Six Viking runners finished in the top-10. Annie Pfiefle finished third with a time of 16:55.27, Leah Black in fourth (17:11.37), Kyle Blakeslee in fifth (17:15.26), Kristin Brondbo ninth (17:29.21) and Molly Kokesh in 11th (17:53.26).

On the men's side, Paul Yak and Travis Beniak battled for the top spot with Yak coming out on top with a time of 19:21.98 and Beniak a time of 19:22.34. The Vikings had the top-six finishers in the men's race. TJ Gleason finished third (19:22.70), Ryan Evans fourth (19:23.06), Adam Braun fifth (19:23.50) and Shane McCallum sixth (19:26.84).

Augustana returns to action on Sept. 14 at the SDSU Classic on Sept. 14 in Brookings, S.D.
