Holmberg finishes second, qualifies for NCAA Championships at MSU heptathlon

MANKATO, Minn.
- Henrik Holmberg finished second in the men's heptathlon and provisionally qualified for the NCAA Championships with a score of 4,906 points at the Minnesota State Open and Pentathlon on Saturday.  Katie Guse also competed at the event and placed third in the high jump.
 
Tor Myrhol also competed for the Vikings and registered a 10th-place finish with 3,887 points.
 
Holmberg, who's battled several injuries in his young career, can take solace that when completing an often grueling heptathlon he qualified for the NCAA Championships.  Holmberg's score, adjusted for track size equates to 4,930, is the eighth-best mark in Division II this season. 
 
The Vik, Norway native opened the day with a fourth-place finish in the 1,000-meter run, finishing in 2:57.12.  Holmberg followed that with a  9.17 60-meter hurdles and cleared 3.74 meters in the pole vault to take solidify his overall second-place finish.
 
Guse did not jump her best on Saturday, but she still mustered a tie for second by clearing 1.61 meters.
 
The Vikings return to action next weekend at the Ted Nelson Classic in Mankato, Minn. on Feb. 2.
