Jans' title leads seven Vikings to place at DWU Open

RESULTS

MITCHELL, S.D.
- Blake Jans' 133-pound title highlighted Augustana's 14 wrestlers who competed at the Dakota Wesleyan Open on Saturday. Seven Vikings placed at the meet on Friday including Zach Friederich's third-place finish.

Jans was the only Augustana Viking wrestler who didn't withdraw to finish with an undefeated record. After a first-round bye, Jans reeled off four straight wins to earn his first career tournament win.

Jans found himself in the final after three straight first-round pins including a 56-second fall in the semifinal bout against Grad View's Jacob Grant. In the final bout, Jans edged Richard Rios of host Dakota Wesleyan for the 133-pound title.

At 149 pounds, Friederich reached the semifinals before suffering his only defeat of the day. In the consolation bracket, Friederich won a 10-5 decision before pinning Sean Elkins of Dickinson State in 2:43 to grab third place. Also at 149 pounds, Shawn Hatlestad dominated his only opponent with a 18-0 technical fall before withdrawing to an unattached Viking.

Connor Malone worked his way to the 157-pound quarterfinals with a pair of decisions before succumbing to Dusty Paulsen of DWU. In the consolation bracket, Malone racked up a 12-3 major decision and a 5-3 decision before being pinned late in the third round of the consolation semis and faced Paulsen again in the fifth-place bout.

Sean Derry kept his weekend winless streak alive at 6-0 with three major decision wins at 184 pounds. Derry withdrew from the tournament as he would have faced an unattached Augustana wrestler in the semifinals of the championship bracket.

Parker Swanson advanced to the 165-pound semifinals with a first-round pin and an 11-0 major decision after an opening-round bye then suffered a 2-0 loss in the semifinals. Swanson ended with a 2-1 record after withdrawing from the consolation bracket.

Brandon Charbonneau and Jacob Anderson each lost in the quarterfinals and worked back in the consolation bracket where they met in the third-place bout. Charbonneau was pinned in his third bout of the day after tallying two major decisions to open the meet. Anderson pinned his second-round opponent in 2:32 after a first-round bye then suffered his only defeat of the day, an 11-5 decision at the hands of second-place finisher Blake Fruchtl.

Charbonneau collected two decision wins and a 14-4 major decision, his third of the day, to earn a spot in the third-place bout. Anderson used two consecutive five-point decisions and a 6-3 win to advance to meet Charbonneau in the third-place match.

Augustana returns to action at the Holiday Inn Open hosted by Nebraska-Kearney on Nov. 23.
