Vikings outlast Hawaii Pacific for first win of season

BOX SCORE WAIPAHU, Hawaii – Augustana outlasted Hawaii Pacific scoring six runs in the top of the 11th inning to earn a 24-19 victory over the Sea Warriors in the first game of a doubleheader on Sunday afternoon in Waipahu, Hawaii. The game lasted five hours and 24 minutes and saw 43 runs cross the plate and 35 hits between the two teams.

Both teams scored seven runs in the 10th inning but the Vikings (1-2) were able to push six runs across in the top of the sixth before holding Hawaii Pacific (2-1) to just one run in the home half of the inning to hang on for the win.

Nate Hewes was 3 for 5 at the plate for the Vikings while driving in a career-high four runs. Hewes hit his first home run of the season in the fifth inning. David Borchardt finished the game 3 for 4 at the plate with three RBI. Borchardt hit a three-run blast in the top of the fourth inning for his 15th career home run.

Augustana had seven players with multiple hits in the game. Freshman infielder Zach Dibble recorded his first career multi-hit game finishing with three hits and two RBI.

The Vikings used five pitchers on the day with Michael Letkewicz earning the victory on the hill. Letkewicz (1-0) tossed 3.0 innings while giving up eight runs on four hits. 

Hawaii Pacific jumped out of the gates taking a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning on a two-run double by Sumner.

The Vikings cut the lead in half when Nate Hewes doubled down the left field line to score Brendan Koistinen, who got on base with a one-out walk.

An inning and a half later Hawaii Pacific scored three runs on three hits to gain a 5-1 lead but the Vikings broke-through with a four-run top of the fourth inning to tie the game at 5.

The Vikings got a leadoff base runner when Marcus O'Neill was hit by a pitch, Hewes followed that with a bunt single to put runners on first and third. Ben Ludwigson moved the runners up on a sacrifice bunt and Zach Dibble drove in a run on a ground out to the shortstop.

Jake Petersen walked to put two runners on for Borchardt, who launched a three-run home run over the right field fence for his first big fly of the season (15th career). Borchardt singled in the first inning of today's game to extend his hitting streak to 17 games. The senior ended the 2012 season on a 14-game hitting streak and has reached safely with a hit in all three games this season thus far.

After Hawaii Pacific scored three runs in the bottom half of the fourth inning to regain the lead at 8-5, Augustana recorded a four-run fifth inning to go back in front 9-8.

Brian Duxbury led off the fifth with a walk before Patrick O'Donnell singled, allowing Duxbury to advance to third and setting up Hewes with runners at the corners. Hewes stepped up to the plate and belted his fifth career home run down the left field line to tie the game at 8. Later in the inning, Dibble plated the go-ahead run scoring on a wild pitch.

In the bottom of the fifth inning, Marvin Campbell hit a two-run home run over the right field wall to give the Sea Warriors one-run 10-9 lead.

Augustana scored two runs in the top of the eight and Hawaii Pacific plated a run in the bottom half of the inning before neither team scored in the eighth and for the second time in as many days, the two teams would go to extra frames.
