BOX SCORE WAIPAHU, Hawaii – Hawaii Pacific (4-1) exploded for eight runs in the bottom of the second inning and that would be enough as the Sea Warriors defeated Augustana 13-7 on Monday night in Waipahu, Hawaii.
Junior
Tony Viger was 2 for 4 at the plate for the Vikings (1-4) while driving in a career-high three runs. Viger finished the game with a triple and a double, both scoring runs, and drove in his third run of the game on a sacrifice fly.
Augustana had three triples in the game, including Viger's.
David Borchardt extended his hitting streak to 18 games after going 2 for 3 at the plate with a triple. Marus O'Neill delivered the other triple for the Vikings, going 1 for 5 at the plate.
Augustana finished the game with 14 hits but left 12 runners on base. The Viking pitchers walked six batters while hitting three and giving up nine earned runs in the contest.
Sam Gotham (0-1) earned the loss on the mound for the Vikings giving up seven runs, five earned, in 1.1 innings of work.
John Albert (1-0) was awarded the win for the Sea Warriors after tossing five innings and allowing two runs, one earned, on four hits.
Hawaii Pacific was led offensively by Marvin Campbell, who was 3 for 5 at the plate with two RBI. Russell Doi finished the game 2 for 3 at the plate with three RBI.
The Vikings got on the board in their first chance at the plate when Viger tripled to right center to drive in
David Borchardt, who walked in the previous at-bat. Viger then came in to score on a passed ball to push Augustana's lead to 2-0. The Vikings loaded the bases with two outs in the inning before
Ben Ludwigson struck out looking to end the threat.
In the top of the second inning, Viger delivered his second extra-base hit and second RBI of the game when he doubled to left field scoring
Jake Petersen to push the score to 3-0. One batter later
Kye Winter hit a sacrifice fly to right field to score Borchardt giving the Vikings a 4-0 lead.
Hawaii Pacific exploded for eight runs in the bottom of the second inning scoring as the Viking pitchers walked four batters and hit two leading to the big inning. The Sea Warriors extended their lead to 10-4 in the bottom of the third inning after a two-run single by Wade Tamaru.
Petersen opened the fourth inning with a single through the left side of the infield and moved up to third on a single by Borchardt that extended his hitting streak to 18 games. Petersen came around to score on Viger's third RBI of the game when hit a sacrifice fly to left field.
Winter reached on an error by the shortstop allowing Borchardt to move up to third and
Brendan Koistinen grounded out to first base and the Sea Warriors conceded the run allowing Borchardt to cross the plate to make the score 10-6.
HPU added an unearned run in the sixth inning when Kale Sumner crossed the plate as Cody Ellenwood reached on an error by the Vikings pushing the Sea Warriors' lead to 11-6.
After a scoreless seventh inning Hawaii Pacific took a seven-run lead at 13-6 when Doi cracked a two-run single up the middle.
Winter led off the top of the ninth with a double down the left field line to start a rally for the Vikings.
Brendan Koistinen followed with a single up the middle to score Winter and bring the score to 13-7. Despite loading the bases in the final frame, the Vikings were unable to push another run across.
Augustana will have the next two days off before starting a six-game series at Hawaii-Hilo, beginning with a doubleheader on Thursday, Feb. 7, at 8 p.m. CT.
