Quame records two saves as Vikings sweep twinbill at Hawaii-Hilo

BOX SCORE 1 | BOX SCORE 2 HILO, Hawaii – Augustana (4-5) closed-out its season-opening trip to Hawaii with an 8-6 win over Hawaii-Hilo (1-3) in the second game of a doubleheader on Saturday night. The Vikings picked up a 16-13 win over the Vulcans in the first game earlier today. 

Game 1 Recap

Augustana held a 16-9 lead heading into the bottom half of the ninth inning before Hawaii-Hilo scored four runs on three hits before Quame slammed the door shut.

Michael Willman earned the win on the hill for the Vikings after tossing 1.2 innings while allowing four runs on three hits.

Tony Viger led the Vikings offensively going 3 for 5 at the plate while driving in a career-high five runs. Borchardt matched his career-high with four hits and three RBI in the contest.

Zach Dibble delivered three hits while Kye Winter and Brendan Koistinen each had two.

Augustana struck first in the top of the second inning picking up three runs on four hits. The inning started with three straight singles by Koistinen, Nate Hewes and Brian Duxbury. The Vikings pushed the game's first run across when Ben Ludwigson reached on a fielder's choice to score Kostinen.

Augustana went up 2-0 on a passed ball with two outs before Jake Petersen singled to score Ludwigson to push the lead to 3-0.

The Vulcans tied the game in the bottom of the third inning scoring three runs on three hits and an error but the Vikings answered with a five-run fourth inning to regain the lead at 8-3.

Hawaii-Hilo pushed two more runs across in the bottom of the fourth to cut Augustana's lead to 8-5 but the Vikings' bats answered once again with a four-run fifth inning to go ahead 12-5.

The sixth inning saw seven more runs cross the plate between the two teams as the Vikings pushed three across in the top half of the inning before Hawaii-Hilo plated four runs to make the score 15-9.

Augustana added to its lead in the top of the eighth when Petersen delivered a sacrifice fly to center field to score Dibble who reached on a single to lead off the inning, make the score 16-9.

The Vulcans made a comeback attempt in the bottom of the ninth inning scoring four runs on three hits before Quame came in to close-out the victory for the Vikings.

Game 2 Recap

Quame recorded his third save of the season shutting the door on the Vulcans in the bottom of the seventh inning with the game-winning run at the plate. After getting the first two batters out on a fly out and strikeout, Quame gave up a hit and a walk to bring the go-ahead run to the plate. The junior picked off Keenan Nishioka at second base, who singled with two outs in the inning to start the threat. 

Jake Petersen and Jason Rasmussen each had two hits for the Vikings. Grant Larson evened his season record to 1-1 earning the win on the mound. Larson tossed 4.1 innings picking up two strikeouts while allowing four hits.

The Vikings jumped out to an early 5-0 lead after a five-run first inning. Petersen started off the game with a single through the left side of the infield before Borchardt was hit by a pitch. Viger drove in the first run of the game on a single to left field.

After three straight walks the Vikings extended their lead to 3-0 before Brian Duxbury picked up an RBI getting hit by a pitch allowing another run to score. Jason Rasmussen singled up the middle to score Koistinen to push the lead to 5-0.

Hawaii-Hilo answered right back in the home half of the first inning scoring four runs on two hits and two Augustana errors to come within one at 5-4.

After a scoreless second inning, Augustana took a 6-4 lead in the top of the third inning after Ludwigson singled to left field to score Duxbury who doubled down the left field line with two outs in the inning.

The Vulcans pushed a run across in the bottom of the third inning to make the score 6-5 and the Vikings answered with a three-run fourth inning to go in front 8-5.

In the fourth inning, Petersen singled and Borchardt doubled to start off the inning. Viger was hit by a pitch to load the bases and Winter delivered an RBI single to score Petersen. Kostinen then grounded out to first base to drive in the eighth run of the game for the Vikings.

The Vulcans got a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the sixth inning to make the score 8-6 before Quame came in to shut the door once again.

Augustana will return to action on Friday, Feb. 15, taking on Winona State in non-conference action at the H.H.H. Metrodome with a doubleheader beginning at 8:15 p.m.
