Southern Indiana stranded nine Viking runners in win

BOX SCORE EVANSVILLE, Ind. – Augustana left the bases loaded in the top of the ninth inning in a 2-1 loss to Southern Indiana in rainy Evansville, Ind. on Sunday afternoon. Southern Indiana (8-1) pushed runs across in the first and fourth inning on its way to victory over the Vikings (8-7).

Augustana left nine runners on base, while out-hitting Southern Indiana 9-6 in the contest. Batting leadoff, Jake Petersen led the Vikings going 3 for 5 at the plate. Nate Hewes reached base in all three at bats finishing with two singles and a walk.

Matt Bowles (2-1) tossed seven innings for the Screaming Eagles earning the win. Bowles allowed five hits and a run while striking out five batters and walking just one. Ben Heairet (1-3) was tagged with the loss for the Vikings throwing eight innings and giving up six hits, two earned runs, while striking out six batters.

Southern Indiana grabbed an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning on an RBI single by Reece Rounder.

The Vikings left three runners on base in the next three innings and Southern Indiana used an RBI single by A.J. Dokey to go ahead 2-0. Dokey singled in Colton White who led off the inning with a walk.

Augustana put together a two-hit fifth inning and a three-hit eighth inning but was only able to push one run across in the top of the eighth inning. Zach Dibble and Petersen started off the eighth inning with back-to-back singles.

David Borchardt then loaded the bases with a bunt single before Tony Viger drove in Augustana's only run with a sacrifice fly to left field, scoring Dibble. With runners now on second and third, Petersen was caught stealing and tagged out in a rundown before Jack Goihl flied out to right field to end the inning.

The Vikings put together a two-out threat in the bottom of the ninth inning but came away empty. Kye Winter struck out to open the inning before Michael Willman walked but was lifted for a pinch runner in Dylan Platt. Platt was then picked off of first base for the second out of the inning.

Brendan Koistinen delivered a two-out double to left center field before Hewes and Dibble reached base on walks. Petersen struck out swinging and the Vikings' threat was ended.

Augustana returns to action tomorrow with a doubleheader against the University of Indianapolis beginning at noon in Evansville.
