BOX SCORE EVANSVILLE, Ind. – The 10th-ranked University of Indianapolis (6-1) scored three runs in the first two innings and held on for a 4-2 victory over Augustana College in Evansville, Ind. on Sunday. Phil Wheeler (1-0) tossed all nine innings for the Greyhounds striking out 10 batters earning the victory on the hill.
The Vikings (8-6) finished the game with nine hits, but were unable to push enough runs across, leaving seven runners on base in the contest.
Jake Petersen,
Tony Viger and
Jack Goihl each had two hits in the game. Goihl made his first appearance of the season for the Vikings as he missed the first 13 games due to an injury.
Brady Thomas led the Greyhounds offensively with three hits while Tyler O'Daniel delivered a two-RBI double in the bottom of the first inning.
Kye Winter (0-1) was tagged with the loss for the Vikings as he allowed three runs, two earned, on six hits.
The Vikings got on the board in the top of the first inning on an RBI single by Viger.
Jake Petersen led off the game with a single to right field and moved up to second on a ground out by
David Borchardt. Viger then sent a single down the left field line to scoring Petersen to put the Vikings up 1-0.
The University of Indianapolis answered in the home half of the first inning to take a 2-1 lead. Scott Lawley delivered a one-out double to left center field before Jake Hartley walked to put runners on first and second. With Tyler O'Daniel at the plate, Winter was called for a balk and each runner moved up a base. O'Daniel then smashed a double down the left field line to score both runners.
The Greyhouds added an unearned run in the bottom of the second inning to push their lead to 3-1. Keegan Remsburg reached on an error with one out in the inning and eventually scored when Winter was called for his second balk of the contest.
Augustana made it a one run game, 3-2, in the bottom of the sixth inning on an RBI single by
Brendan Koistinen. Koistinen singled to right field with the bases loaded with one out in the inning. The Vikings had the go-ahead runs on base but Phil Wheeler struck out
Nate Hewes and
Jason Rasmussen to end the threat.
The University of Indianapolis added an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth inning whenMitch Ransburg scored an unearned run on a throwing error by
Grant Larson. Ransburg started things off with a one out single and then scored after Thomas singled, which moved Ransburg to second. On the play, Larson committed a throwing error that allowed Ransburg to score.
The Vikings went down in order in the top of the ninth inning.
