Vikings snap three-game skid with game two win over Greyhounds

BOX SCORE 1 | BOX SCORE 2 EVANSVILLE, Ind. – Augustana (9-8) snapped a three-game losing streak with a 7-4 win over 10th-ranked University of Indianapolis in the second game of a doubleheader on Monday afternoon in rainy Evansville, Ind. The University of Indianapolis (7-2) won the opener 12-4 over the Vikings.

Game one
The University of Indianapolis used a four-run second inning and pounded out 13 hits in a 12-4 win over Augustana in the first game of a twinbill on Monday. The Greyhounds scored eight runs in the first three innings and added three more in the top of the fifth to down the Vikings.

Jake Hartley hit for the cycle for the University of Indianapolis while driving in five runs in the contest. The Greyhounds had five players with multiple hits in the contest.

Matt Pate (1-0) earned the win for the Greyhounds tossing five innings while allowing four runs and striking out three batters.

David Borchardt (0-2) started for the Vikings and lasted just two innings after giving up six hits and six runs, three earned.

Augustana scattered five hits in the contest, three of which came in its four-run fifth inning.

The University of Indianapolis got on the board in the top of the first inning scoring two runs on three hits. Hartley started off his bid for the cycle, belting a triple down the right field line to score the game's first run. U-Indy made it a 2-0 game when Hartley scored on a Tyler O'Daniel single.

The Greyhounds added to their lead in the top of the second inning scoring four runs on three hits to go in front 6-0. Hartley belted a two-run home run in the inning.

U-Indy made it an 8-0 game in the top of the third inning after a hit batter and a walk with the bases loaded.

Augustana left the bases loaded in the bottom of the fourth inning and the University of Indianapolis responded in the top of the fifth scoring three runs on three hits to push its lead to 11-0. The big blow came on a two-run home run by Nick Whitty.

The Vikings put up four runs in the fifth inning on three hits. Marcus O'Neill led off the inning with a walk and advanced to second on a single by Jake Petersen. Borchardt and Tony Viger delivered back-to-back doubles and the Vikings got on the board to make the score 11-3. The Vikings would score one more time in the inning making the score 11-4.

The University of Indianapolis added a run in the top of the seventh, to make the score 12-4.

Game two
Augustana's bats woke up in the nightcap as the Vikings accounted for 12 hits in the game. Five Vikings had multiple hits in the game as both Borchardt and Viger went 2 for 4 at the plate with two RBI each. Marcus O'Neill was 2 for 4 at the plate while scoring two runs. Nate Hewes and Zach Dibble also had two hits in the game for the Vikings.

Jordan Milbrath earned his second victory on the mound for the Vikings tossing six innings while giving up just three hits and striking out four batters. Derek Quame closed-out his fifth save of the season shutting down the Greyhounds in the bottom of the seventh inning.

Augustana struck in the top of the first inning and took a 2-0 lead. Petersen led off the game with a single and Borchardt drove him in with a triple to right center field. In the next at bat, Viger drove in Borchardt with an RBI single up the middle.

The University of Indianapolis tied the game at 2 in the bottom of the second inning before the Vikings took a four-run lead at 6-2 in the top of the fourth.

O'Neill led off the inning with a single and Ben Ludwigson was hit by a pitch to put runners on first and second setting up Hewes' RBI single up the middle. Dibble followed with a single through the right side of the infield scoring Ludwigson and forcing a Greyhound pitching change.

Petersen advanced runners to second and third on a sacrifice bunt and Borchardt drove in another run as he grounded out to second base and Hewes scored in the play. Viger then delivered another RBI single to score Dibble for the Vikings' fourth run of the inning.

Ludwigson made the score 7-2 in the top of the fifth inning with an RBI single scoring O'Neill who got on base with a two-out double.

The University of Indianapolis added two runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to make the score 7-4 but Milbrath and Quame slammed the door shut on the Greyhounds in the final three innings to help the Vikings end a three-game skid.

Augustana closes-out its spring trip with a nine inning game against Southern Indiana beginning at 2 p.m. in Evansville.
