Vikings defeat Division I Chicago State in Orlando

MATCH SCORES

ORLANDO, Fla.
– For the second time this year, the Augustana women's tennis team knocked off a Division I opponent; this time the Vikings (11-1) took down Chicago State, 6-3, in their second match of their spring trip on Tuesday evening.

The Vikings, looking to bounce back from their first loss of the year, were forced to cancel their morning match with Central College due to inclement weather.  The Vikings didn't let the rain further dampen their moods as they knocked off the Cougars to get back to their winning ways.

Katie Jesperson continued to play at a high level by defeating the Chicago State top singles player 6-3, 6-3.  Jessa Richards would not be as fortunate, falling in three sets at No. 2 singles.  The freshman won the first set 6-4, but fell in set two 7-5 and was edged in the tiebreaker 10-4.

Michelle Wadas suffered similar fate after winning her first set 6-2 at No. 3 singles.  Wadas was upended 6-1, and 10-3 in the next two sets.   Hannah Gebauer righted the ship with her 6-3, 6-2 win as she stayed undefeated in the 2013 season.

Heather Sullivan was the third Viking to split the first two sets, but the sophomore bucked the trend and emerged victorious.  Sullivan dropped the first set 6-3 then responded by winning the next two sets 6-1, 6-3, giving Augustana a 3-2 edge in the singles matches.

Jenna Helleberg dismantled her opponent at No. 6 singles with a crushing 6-0, 6-2 win for the fourth Augustana singles win in the match.

Teaming up at No. 1 doubles, Jesperson and Wadas managed one more break than their opponents and won 8-6.  Richards and Gebauer suffered their first defeat of the year at No. 2 doubles, falling in a hard-fought 8-6 match.

Sullivan and Helleberg closed the door on their Cougar opponents with an 8-4 win at No. 3 doubles to bring the Vikings to their final 6-3 team score.

The Vikings will face another Division I opponent at 10:30 Wednesday morning in the Radford University Highlanders.
