Eight run inning leads Vikings past Dakota Wesleyan

BOX SCORE SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – Augustana used an eight run fifth inning to defeat Dakota Wesleyan University (10-11) 17-7 under the lights at Karras Park Home of Ronken Field on Wednesday night. David Borchardt led the Vikings (11-9) offensively with a 3 for 5 performance with a career-high six RBI.

Tony Viger also had a big night at the plate for the Vikings. Viger also went 3 for 5 at the plate while driving in four runs.

Jake Petersen, Kye Winter and Alex Fink each collected two hits and an RBI for the Vikings. Michael Willman (3-0) earned his third win of the season on the mound. He tossed 4.2 innings and allowed four runs on six hits while striking out three batters in his fourth appearance of the season.

Dakota Wesleyan scored the game's first run in the top of the first inning when Michael Lukkason grounded into a double play to score Kirk McBreen who led off the game with a double.

The Vikings tied the game at one in the bottom of the first inning on an RBI double by Viger. Augustana took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the second inning when Petersen singled to left field to score Ben Ludwigson who reached on an error earlier in the inning.

Augustana pushed its lead to 5-1 scoring three runs in the bottom of the third inning. Viger delivered his first home run of the season with a shot to right field with one out in the inning to make the score 3-1. The Vikings scored a run on a wild pitch before Ludwigson delivered a double to drive in another making it a four run game.

Dakota Wesleyan got back on the board in the top of the fourth inning to make it a 5-3 game. Tim Cusick led off the inning with a home run to right field before Erik Nockleby belted a one-out home run over the center field fence to bring the Tigers within two.

Augustana got a one out hit in the fourth but left two runners on base and DWU made it a 5-4 game with a run in the fifth. The Vikings then poured on eight runs in the bottom of the fifth inning on five hits to go in front 13-4.

In the fifth inning, Alex Fink belted his first career home run and Viger, Winter and Borchardt each delivered RBI hits. Marcus O'Neill also helped a run across as he picked up an RBI on a walk.

Augustana added three more runs in the sixth and another in the eighth inning as the Vikings earned the 17-7 win.

The Vikings return to action this Friday and Saturday hosting Southwest Minnesota State for a four game series. Both doubleheaders will begin at noon at Karras Park Home of Ronken Field in Sioux Falls.
