Augustana sweeps Upper Iowa in walk-off fashion

BOX SCORE 1 | BOX SCORE 2 FAYETTE, Iowa – Augustana used two walk-off wins to earn a sweep over Upper Iowa University on Tuesday. Jake Petersen cracked an RBI single with the bases loaded to give the Vikings a 7-6 extra inning win in game one while Alex Fink delivered a two-RBI single in the bottom of the seventh of game two, giving Augustana (22-15, 10-6) a 5-4 win and series sweep over the Peacocks (10-13, 2-4 NSIC). 

Game one
After losing a five-run lead, Augustana needed extra innings to earn a 7-6 win over Upper Iowa in the first game of the doubleheader. Petersen came up with the bases loaded in the bottom of the eighth inning and sent a single through the right side of the infield to lift the Vikings to the win.

Nate Hewes started the rally in the eighth inning with a one out double down the left field line. Upper Iowa then walked Ben Ludwigson to put runners on first and second before Zach Dibble loaded the bases with a single. Petersen then delivered the walk-off single with the bases loaded to lift Augustana to a 7-6 win.   

Petersen finished the game 2-for-4 at the plate with an RBI while Alex Fink was 1-for-3 with two RBI and a run scored. Kye Winter and Tony Viger each went 2-for-4 at the plate while the Vikings finished the game with 10 hits.

Derek Quame was credited with the win for the Vikings, improving to 2-0 on the season. Quame pitched 2.0 innings and struck out two batters while holding Upper Iowa hitless. 

Upper Iowa finished the game with 11 hits, led by Mike Henrichs who was 2-for-3 with two RBI. Tyler Adams, Jimmy Pinakidis and John Dobson each added two hits for the Peacocks.

Augustana got off to a fast start scoring five runs in the bottom of the first inning to take a 5-0 lead. The Vikings quickly loaded the bases with back-to-back walks before Viger laid down a bunt single. Jack Goihl then walked to score the game's first run and Fink then delivered a two-RBI single with one out to make the score 3-0.

Goihl then scored on a wild pitch and Fink scored before Ludwigson was picked off between first and second base to end the inning.

Upper Iowa made it a 5-3 game in the top of the third inning after the Vikings got into a jam early loading the bases with nobody out. Henrichs walked with the bases loaded to score the first run and the Peacocks scored two more runs on two groundouts before Letkewicz was able to get out of the inning.

The Peacocks got a little closer to tying things up in the top of the fifth inning after Henrichs led off the inning with a triple and was driven in on a sacrifice fly by Andrew Kraus to bring the score to 5-4.

Upper Iowa continued to chip away at Augustana's lead and tied the game at 5 in the top of the sixth inning when Tyler Adams scored after leading off the inning with a walk, and stealing a base, coming in to score when Pinakidis reached on an error. One batter later, Henrichs sent a double to right center field to score Pinakidis and give Upper Iowa a 6-5 lead.

After giving up an early five run lead, Augustana would not go down quietly in the bottom of the seventh inning tying the game at six and sending it to extra innings. Marcus O'Neill got on base with a one out walk but made the second out of the inning getting thrown out at third base after Viger sent a single to left field. Viger would eventually score the game tying run as Goihl came up with a clutch two-out single scoring Viger.

Upper Iowa got the go-ahead run to third base in the top of the eighth inning but Quame was able to get out of the inning unscathed and the Vikings were able to answer with the game-winning run in the bottom of the inning.

Game two
The Vikings trailed 4-3 heading into the final inning of game two before they got some late inning magic for the second straight game. Hewes and Dibble started off the rally with back-to-back singles and in an attempt to move the runners up a base before Petersen was able to reach and load the bases on a bunt single. On the play, Hewes attempted to score but was thrown out at the plate but Dibble was able to make his way to third on the play.

Marus O'Neill then fouled out to third base and the Vikings were down to just one out left with runners on first and third. Petersen stole second base and Viger walked to set Fink up with the bases loaded and two outs. Fink came through with a clutch two-RBI single off the right field fence to give the Vikings a walk-off win for the second straight game.

Fink finished the game 2-for-4 with two RBI while Petersen and Winter each had two hits for the Vikings. Augustana had 10 hits in the win while Upper Iowa finished with seven.

Grant Larson earned the win on the mound for Augustana, improving to 4-4 on the season. Larson tossed 1.1 innings while striking out three batters. Michael Willman made the start for Augustana and lasted 5.1 innings giving up four earned runs while striking out five batters and walking one.

Upper Iowa grabbed an early lead in the nightcap going for two runs on two hits in the top of the first inning. Henrichs started off the scoring with an RBI on a groundout to the shortstop before Andrew Kraus grounded out to drive in another run to make it 2-0 after one.

Jose Aguirre made it a 3-0 game in the top of the third inning on an RBI single to score Henrichs who got the inning going with a one-out single.

Augustana got on the board in the bottom fifth inning scoring an unearned run to make it a 3-1 game. Goihl came across to score after Brian Duxbury reached on a fielder's choice and an error allowed Goihl to cross the plate.

The Peacocks answered right back to push its lead to 4-1 in the top of the sixth inning on an RBI sacrifice fly by Eric Anderson, scoring Aguire who walked with one out in the inning.

Goihl and Winter came up with big two-out doubles in the bottom of the sixth inning to bring the Vikings within one run at 4-3 heading into the final frame.

The Vikings would carry the momentum right into the bottom of the seventh inning, scoring two more runs on yet another clutch two-out hit, this time by freshman first baseman Fink.

Augustana is scheduled to play at Minnesota, Crookston this Saturday and Sunday in a four-game series. The Golden Eagles have yet to play a home game. Stay tuned to GoAugie.com for and schedule adjustments for that series.
