Mavericks take game one of series; game two postponed to Monday

BOX SCORE MANKATO, Minn. – No. 14-ranked Minnesota State (19-7, 8-3 NSIC) used a five run fifth inning to get past Augustana (16-12, 5-3 NSIC) 10-2 in the first game of a doubleheader on Saturday. The start of today's game was delayed three hours due to rain in the Mankato area.

Because of the late start, game two of today's doubleheader has been postponed until Monday at noon. The two teams will play a regularly scheduled doubleheader at 12 p.m. tomorrow at MSU's Baseball Complex in Mankato.

MSU's Harvey Martin improved to 4-0 on the season going the distance for the win on the hill. Martin allowed two runs on five hits and struck out 11 Vikings this afternoon. Kye Winter got the start on the mound for Augustana and tossed 5.0 innings giving up eight runs on nine hits. Winter finished the game with four strikeouts and falls to 1-2 on the season.

Stetson Olson had a big day for the Mavericks going 2-for-3, including a home run and driving in five runs. Nolan Johnson was 4-for-4 at the dish while picking up three RBI.

Jake Petersen and Marcus O'Neill were the only Vikings' with a multiple hit game. Petersen went 2-for-3 with two RBI and hit his second home run of the season. O'Neill finished 2-for-2 with two singles.

Augustana scored the first run of the game taking a 1-0 lead on a leadoff home run by Petersen.

Minnesota State responded in the bottom half of the inning scoring three runs on four hits to take a 3-1 lead. Connor McCallum opened the inning with a solo shot to left center field and Nolan Johnson and Taylor Branstad followed with back-to-back singles.

On Branstad's single, Johnson went to third on the throw from right field and Branstad was able to take second base as the throw went through to third. That set up Olson's two-RBI single through the right side of the infield.

O'Neill got a two-out hit for Augustana in the top of the fifth inning but was caught stealing to end the inning. Minnesota State then scored five runs on three hits and two Augustana errors in the bottom of the fifth inning to go in front 8-2. The big blow of the inning came on a three-run home run by Olson.

The Mavericks added two more runs in the bottom of the sixth inning after a two-RBI double by Johnson that pushed MSU's lead to 10-2.

Augustana and Minnesota State will play a doubleheader tomorrow at 12 p.m. at MSU's Baseball Complex.
