Winter's complete game leads Vikings to split at St. Cloud State

BOX SCORE 1 | BOX SCORE 2 ST. CLOUD, Minn. – Augustana had its 15-game winning streak snapped in an 8-1 loss in game one of a doubleheader with St. Cloud State University before Kye Winter tossed a complete game in a 3-1 win for the Vikings in the nightcap.

Augustana is now 32-16 on the season, including 17-7 in NSIC play while the Vikings handed St. Cloud State its second conference loss of the season, as the Huskies are now 28-6, 16-2 NSIC. The Huskies are ranked 11th in the NCBWA top 25 poll and eighth in the Collegiate Baseball top 30. 

Game one
Scott Lieser held Augustana to a season-low two hits while striking out six batters and improving to 8-3 on the season. Augustana's Jordan Milbrath was handed his first loss of the season as he allowed eight runs on 11 hits while striking out five batters.

Five SCSU players had two hits in the game, led by Garrett Fischer and Sean Borman who each went 2-for-4 with two RBI.

Alex Fink stretched his hitting streak to 13 games, picking up one of Augustana's two hits in the contest. Fink also scored Augustana's lone run, crossing the plate on an RBI sacrifice fly by Kye Winter.

St. Cloud State led 2-0 at the end of the first inning after Phil Imholte led off the bottom half with a home run. Eric Loxtercamp followed Imholte with a single and a stolen base and came around to score the second run of the inning on an RBI single by Garrett Fischer.

Augustana got two runners on right away in the top of the second with Fink and David Borchardt getting back-to-back singles to start the inning. Fink and Borchardt moved up to second and third on a groundout by Nate Hewes before Winter sent a sacrifice fly to left field to score Fink and make it a 2-1 game.

The Huskies added a run in the third inning to push its lead to 3-1 on an RBI single by Fischer fore Imholte increased the lead to 4-1 in the fourth with a sacrifice fly.

The Vikings went down in order in the final three innings of the game and St. Cloud State scored four runs on four hits and one Augustana error in the bottom of the sixth inning to extened its lead to 8-1. 

Game two
St. Cloud State struck first in the nightcap taking a 1-0 lead on an RBI groundout by Fischer, scoring Imholte who led off the inning with a walk.

After going down quietly in the first two innings, Augustana scored two runs on three hits in the top of the third inning to go in front 2-1, a lead the Vikings would hold for the remainder of the game.

Winter finished the game going nine strong innings, giving up six hits and a run while striking out seven batters and forcing 11 ground ball outs. This marks the second straight complete game victory for Winter, as he improves to 3-2 on the season, picking up his second win in as many appearances.

Nick Maiers was tagged with the loss for St. Cloud State as the Vikings scored two runs on four hits against him.

Borchardt finished the game going 3-for-4 at the plate, providing the Vikings with an insurance run in the top of the ninth inning with his fifth home run of the season.

Jake Petersen, Tony Viger and Marcus O'Neill each had one hit for the Vikings. Viger drove in a run in the third with an RBI double, his team-leading 13th two-bagger of the season.

Augustana will close-out the regular season this weekend with a four-game series against Wayne State College. The two teams will square-off under the lights on Friday night at Karras Park Home of Ronken Field, with first pitch set for 5 p.m. Saturday's twinbill will begin at 1:30 p.m.
