MANKATO, Minn. – Competing at the Minnesota State Twilight Open, Augustana's men's and women's track and field teams earned 11 event victories and 28 top-five finishes. Ryan Heuer grabbed two event wins while Travis Beniak, Kayla Mescher, and Kristi Porter narrowly missed hitting provisionally-qualifying marks in their respective events.
Heuer ran to his victories in the men's 400-meter dash and the 110-meter hurdles. He led a two more Vikings to a 1-2-3 finish in the 400-meter dash with a 51.71-second time. John Isaacson and Jeremy Botzet finished second and third, respectively. Heuer took the 110-meter hurdles event in 15.63 seconds.
Beniak missed the provisional mark for the men's 1,500-meter run by less than two seconds with a 3:53.55 time. Henrik Hansson followed him to take second, also breaking the four-minute barrier. In the women's 1,500-meter run, Kaitlyn Yoerg won the event with a 4:50.75 time.
Mescher was less than a second off a qualifying time in the women's 800-meter run when she clocked a 2:15.35 to win the event. In the men's 800-meter run, Clint Freiheit quite literally ran away from the competition, taking the event title by nearly five seconds, finishing his two laps in 1:56.59.
Porter had a best throw of 39.23 meters (128' 8”) to win the women's javelin throw. Porter's heave was just 0.73 meters short of hitting the provisional-qualifying mark. Mary Hitchcock placed second in the javelin throw and Porter also notched an eighth-place finish in the discus throw.
Augustana swept the men's and women's 400-meter dash events when Zach Jones and Colleen Everson won their respective events. Jones clocked a 56.89-second lap and Everson completed her 400 meters in 58.93 seconds. Everson also competed in the women's long jump and registered a best jump of 5.30m (17' 4.75”), good enough for second place.
Also, in the 400-meter dash, Charissa Ertheim came in third while Jessika Wager and Brooke Kinney finished fourth and sixth, respectively. Ertheim also placed seventh in the 200-meter dash, two places behind Kirsten Nyberg who finished the 200-meter dash in 26.11 seconds.
Katie Guse and Andrea Whitney finished 1-2 in the women's high jump despite hitting the same mark. Both jumpers cleared 1.56 meters (5' 1.25”), but Guse had fewer faults on her way to her best mark.
Rounding out the winners, Calliann Brunswig brings a 100-meter hurdle championship back to Sioux Falls. The freshman placed first with a 15.70-second time.
Zach Feil logged a couple of top-three finishes in field events, placing second in the triple jump (13.04 meters, 42' 9.5”) and third in the high jump (1.90 meters, 6' 2.75”). Vaughn Thada placed sixth in the high jump (1.85 meters, 6' 0.75”).
Cameron McCaffrey collected his highest finish of the track season when he came in third in the men's long jump. McMaffrey's best leap was 6.08 meters (19” 11.5”); Thada collected his second top-five finish of the evening, checking in onle slot behind McCaffrey.
In the men's 200-meter dash, Nick Goeman clocked a 22.77-second race to finish in fourth. Tor Myrhol almost hit a personal-best in the pole vault with a fourth-place finish (4.16 meters, 13' 7.75”). Alyssa Schmidt finished Augustana's day in the same event as Myrhol when she placed fifth (3.07m, 10' 0.75”).
