DES MOINES, IOWA - Presented with an opportunity to show the country his abilities, Augustana's Keegan Carda did not falter at the USA Track and Field Junior Championships. Carda placed 19th among 27 runners in the 5,000-meter run at the nationwide event.
On the famous Drake University blue track, Carda clocked a 15:37.38 which earned him the honor of the top Division II runner in the field.
Head coach
Tracy Hellman was pleased with his freshman's showing. "I thought Keegan had an outstanding performance in his first USA Junior national meet experience," Hellman said.
Carda, a native of Sioux Falls, S.D., qualified for the event by running the 5k in 14:57.55 at the Kip Janvrin Open during Augustana's outdoor track and field season. Carda also grabbed a point for the second-place Viking men's team at the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Championships by placing eighth in the 10,000-meter run.
"This race concludes an outstanding first year for Keegan," said Hellman who now looks forward to another fruitful year on the cross country circuit in the fall.
