Vikings hold off lions for first win of the year

JOPLIN, Mo. –   Maren Werth's game-winning goal lifted Augustana soccer to a 2-1 victory over Missouri Southern on Sunday afternoon.  For Augustana, the win moves them to 1-1 on the season.  Missouri Southern drops to 0-2 on the year.
 
The Vikings came out on the offensive in the first half, recording 10 shots in total, four of which were on goal.  Leading the way for Augustana was junior Annie Thoresen with three shots.  Forward Payton Pry also fired two shots in the first half.
 
Thoresen delivered the highlight of the period, scoring the first goal of the game in the 44th minute with Taylor Brownrigg assisting on the play.  Thoresen, recording the first goal of her career, put the opening goal in the upper right corner of the net from 10 yards out on the left side of the field.
 
The second half started fast with Werth recording her second goal in as many games during the 56th minute, giving Augustana a 2-0 lead.  Werth, assisted by Aleisha Oehlerking, scored what turned out to be the game-winner from five yards out directly in front of the Lions' net.
 
Missouri Southern refused to let the game get away and cut the Vikings' lead to one by scoring in the 80th minute.  Katelyn Roberson scored her first goal of the year on a header in the right corner, trimming the Augustana lead to 2-1. 
 
The Vikings' defense tightened up after that and the Lions were unable to get any more shots on goal, resulting in the win for Augustana.
 
The Vikings resulted in a season-high 17 shots, eight on goal.  Thoresen lead the way with a career-high four shots.  Pry and senior midfielder Katie Hurd tallied three shots apiece. 
 
Oehlerking and Brownrigg both added an assist in the win, the first of year for each of them.   Oehlerking, a senior forward, showed her versatitily by also recording two shots on goal.
 
Augustana will look for their second win of the year when they hit the road to play at Washburn on Friday, Sept. 13  at 6 p.m.
