No. 20 Vikings fall in five to Cougars

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – The University of Sioux Falls erased a 2-1 deficit earning a five-set victory against No. 20  Augustana College in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference matchup Tuesday night in the Elmen Center with score of 23-25, 31-29, 25-21, 26-28, 10-15.

The Vikings dropped to 14-5 (7-4 NSIC) while the Cougars improved to 12-9 (6-5 NSIC).

Pacing Augustana's offense was Courtney Ysker with her ninth double-double of the season, tallying 19 kills and 15 digs for the night.

Freshman Ashley Wilson followed with 13 kills, while Bailey Koch added 12 kills.

Junior Sydney Hunsley added a season-best 10 kills.

Setter Marissa Johnson tabbed her 10th double-double of the season with 35 assists and 12 digs.

Defensively, it was freshman libero Tahlyr Banks leading the Vikings with 27 digs.

Augustana tallied a season-best 17 blocks in the five-set match.

USF started the first set off recording six out of the first eight points to lead 6-2. The Vikings respond going on a 6-0 run with Ysker tallying four consecutive back-to-back kills. Four straight points from the Cougars cut their deficit to just one point behind the Vikings, 20-19. A final kill from Emily Johnson pushed USF ahead to take the first set 25-23.

Augustana responded in the second set going on an early 4-0 lead. The Vikings went on another run pushing ahead 14-6 early in the set, but Kate Hart's kill pulled the Cougars back in the set tying at 20 apiece. Both team tied seven different times before Augustana took the second set 31-29. Both teams headed into intermission tied at 1-1 in the match.

After the intermission, Augustana jumped out to an early 4-0 run to lead USF 12-10 in the third set. The Vikings built off its momentum pulling ahead 17-13 forcing the Cougars to take a timeout. USF responded going on a 3-0 run, tabbing two-back-to-back kills to tie the set at 19. Augustana went back on a 3-0 run pulling away to take the third set 25-21, giving Augustana a 2-1 advantage in the match.

The battle continued in the fourth set with both teams playing to a 5-5 tie. The Cougars pulled ahead to lead 17-12, but the Vikings came back to tie the set at 24 apiece. Three final points from USF allowed them to take the fourth set 28-26, forcing a fifth and final set.

In the fifth and final set, the Cougars jumped out to an early 5-1 lead and never looked back, taking the final set of the night 15-10, and securing the victory.

Kate Hart led the Cougars with 22 kills.

Augustana will hit the road this weekend to take on Concordia-St. Paul on Oct. 17. The Vikings close out the road trip at Minnesota State on Oct. 18.
