MANKATO, Minn. – No. 20 Augustana College volleyball drops in five sets on the road to Minnesota State Mankato Saturday afternoon with scores of 25-17, 22-25, 25-19, 14-25, and 15-17 in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference matchup.
With the loss, the Vikings dropped to 14-7 (7-6 NSIC), while the Mavericks improved to 13-7 (9-4 NSIC).
Senior
Courtney Ysker logged a stellar performance recording her 10th double-double of the season, registering 16 kills and 13 digs. Freshman
Ashley Wilson followed close behind Ysker's performance with 12 kills.
Brittany Cech rounded out the group of double-digit players tallying her third double-double of the season with 10 kills and 10 digs on the night.
Tahlyr Banks aided in the defensive effort with a team-high 28 digs.
Junior
Marissa Johnson finished the night tallying her 11th double-double of the season with 27 assists and 12 digs.
The Mavericks shot out to an early 12-9 lead in set one. The Vikings responded going on a 4-0 run to lead MSU 13-12. Augustana grabbed eight out of the last 10 points to push ahead and take the first set 25-17. Ysker dominated at the net tallying five kills for the Vikings.
MSU regrouped to start the second set going on an early 5-0 run, building an early lead with a score of 9-2. Augustana rallied back with five unanswered points, capped off by two back-to-back kills from Cech to push ahead 18-17. Both teams tied five different occasions until the Mavericks slammed two final kills taking the second set 25-22.
Both team headed into intermission tied at 1-1 in the match.
The battle continued in the third set as both team tied six different times before the Vikings jumped ahead with a score of 9-7. MSU responded going on a 5-0 run to lead Augustana 12-9. The Vikings went back on a 4-0 run, closing out the third set 25-19.
Augustana took control of the match leading 2-1 to head into the fourth set.
The Mavericks opened the fourth set on a 5-1 lead. Three back-to-back points from Cech and Wilson brought the Vikings within three points forcing MSU to take a timeout. With Augustana unable to settle into an offensive rhythm, the Maverick took 10 out of the last 12 points pulling ahead to take the fourth set 25-14, forcing a fifth and final set.
The Vikings regained momentum in the fifth set pushing to a 8-4 lead. Four straight consecutive points from MSU tied the set at eight. Battling ahead, Cech put down a kill to put Augustana ahead of the Mavericks with a score of 9-8. Both teams tied once again seven different times coming to a halt at 15 apiece. An error from the Vikings, followed by a kill from MSU's Sydney Powell handed the Mavericks the fifth and final set of the night with a 17-15 victory.
Chandra Honebrink led the Mavericks with 25 kills.
Augustana is back in action Friday, Oct. 24 hosting Upper Iowa in the Elmen Center. First serve is slated for 7 p.m.
