SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – Senior
Courtney Ysker became the 22nd member to join the 1,000-kill club at Augustana College recording 19 kills in a sweep over MSU Moorhead Friday night at the Elmen Center by scores of 25-11, 26-24, and 25-20.
The 16th-ranked Vikings improved to 12-3 (5-2 NSIC) with the victory, while the Dragons dropped to 7-8 (2-5 NSIC).
Following Ysker's standout performance,
Bailey Koch added seven kills for Augustana.
Becca Finley led the Vikings with a .429 (4-1-7) attack percentage on the night.
Setter's
Marissa Johnson and
Anna Sykora combined for 45 assists, while defensive specialist
Tahlyr Banks recorded a team-best 17 digs.
Augustana tallied 50 kills as team with a .346 attack percentage, while the Dragons only combined for 32 kills as a team and .167 attack percentage.
The Vikings started the first set off with an early 16-9 lead, forcing MSU Moorhead to take a timeout. Augustana responded by going on an 7-0 run to take a 23-11 lead in the set. Three final kills from the Vikings closed-out the first set as the Vikings downed the Dragons 25-11. Ysker dominated at the net leading Augustana with five kills.
MSU Moorhead looked to respond in the second set, going on an early 4-0 run to lead 5-2. Two back-to-back points from
Ashley Wilson would cut the deficit to one for the Vikings. The Dragons responded and eventually led 15-11, but Augustana retaliated and captured six out of the eight next points to tie the set at 17. The battle continued as both teams tied six different times pushing the set to 24 apiece. The Vikings came out of a timeout fired up, taking the last two points and the second set 26-24.
Augustana entered intermission with a 2-0 lead after holding off the Dragons and Ysker headed into the break only six kills shy of reaching 1,000.
The Vikings opened the third set with a 7-3 lead, before MSU Moorhead would go on a 5-2 run only to trail the Vikings by one point. Four straight points from Augustana would push their lead to 22-17. The Vikings controlled the third set with a final kill from
Kelsey Kaufmann capturing the third set 25-20 and sweeping the Dragons in three sets.
Ysker drilled six kills in the final set, picking up her 1,000th career kill that gave Augustana a 23-18 lead before being subbed out for a curtain call from the Viking faithful in the Elmen Center.
Augustana continues conference play on Saturday against 24th-ranked Northern State at 3 p.m. at the Elmen Center.
