Vikings fall to No.2 Bulldogs in three sets

DULUTH, Minn. – The Augustana College volleyball team falls to No.2 Minnesota Duluth Saturday afternoon in straight sets with scores of 18-25, 8-25, and 11-25.

With the loss, the Vikings' dropped to 16-10, (9-9 NSIC), while the Bulldogs improved to 25-1 (18-0 NSIC).

Bailey Koch led Augustana with six kills, while Becca Finley put down three kills on a .600 (3-0-5) hitting percentage.

Tahlyr Banks led the defensive effort with double-digit digs notching a team-best 14 digs. Setter Marissa Johnson tallied 13 assists.

Kelsey Kaufmann, Brittany Cech, and Ashley Wilson all collected four kills on the night.

UMD limited the Vikings to a .086 (23-15-93) attack percentage, while the Bulldogs recorded an impressive .350 (47-12-100).

In the first set, UMD jumped out to an early 9-6 lead, before Augustana went on a 4-1 run to tie the set at 10-10. The Bulldogs followed going back on a 6-2 run to jump ahead 16-12. UMD never looked back taking the last three points to win the first set 25-18.

The Bulldogs continued to build its momentum in the second set going on an early 4-0 lead forcing the Vikings to take a timeout. Augustana tried trimming the gap tallying the next two points only to trail UMD by two points, with a score of 4-2. The Bulldogs went back on a 9-1 run to regain the control in the set jumping ahead 13-3. UMD took the last five unanswered points in the second set, winning 25-8 to head into intermission.

After intermission, the Vikings went on an early 4-1 lead to jump ahead 7-6. The Bulldogs responded going on a 6-0 run gaining the lead with a score of 12-7. Augustana tried halting UMD's run grabbing two out of the next three points, but the Bulldogs sparked a 7-0 run to push their lead to 20-9. UMD closed out the third and final set going on a 5-2 run taking the third set 25-11.

The Vikings will close out the regular season next weekend hosting Bemidji State on Nov. 7 with a start time of 7 p.m. Following Friday's match-up Augustana will take on Minnesota Crookston. First serve is slated for 3 p.m. in the Elmen Center.
