Jansen pours 33 points on Wayne State in conference-opening win

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. –
Daniel Jansen registered his third career 30-point game, finishing with 33, to lead Augustana College men's basketball to an 89-71 win over Wayne State College (1-3, 0-1 NSIC) in the NSIC opener for both teams on Monday night at Sioux Falls Arena. Augustana (6-0, 1-0 NSIC) has won six straight games to open the season and has now won four straight conference-opening games.
 
Jansen was 10 of 17 from the field, including 3 of 6 from 3-point range and finished 10 of 10 from the free throw line. Jansen added nine rebounds and matched his career-high with six steals.
 
Augustana shot 51.7 percent from the field, marking the fourth time this season the Vikings have shot 50 percent or better from the field.
 
Adam Beyer pitched in matching his career-high with 14 points to go along with six rebounds and five assists. Casey Schilling finished the night with 17 points on 6 of 8 shooting while going 5 of 6 from the free throw line. The Vikings hit a season-high 23 free throws, connecting on 92 percent of its free throws.
 
Jordan Spencer scored 13 points for the second straight game, while adding five rebounds and two assists on the night.  
 
Despite shooting just 29 percent from the field in the first 10 minutes of the first half Augustana was able to take an 18-16 lead after back-to-back buckets by Jansen at 10:43 mark of the opening half. The Vikings got to the line 10 times during the stretch and hit eight of them to take the early lead.
 
The Wildcats started out on fire from 3-point range in the first half hitting 5 of 6 from behind the arc in the first 14 minutes of the game and used a 10-2 run from 9:21 to 6:18 to take a six-point lead at 26-20 after a 3-pointer by Jordan Holdsworth.
 
Augustana's Spencer answered the Holdsworth 3-pointer with one of his own on the other end that sparked an 18-8 run over the final 5:50 of the half as the Vikings took a 38-34 lead. During the run, Jansen scored 10 of his 18 first-half points as Augustana took a 38-36 lead into the half after WSC's Holdsworth scored on a runner as time expired to make the score 38-36.
 
After starting out cool from the field, the Vikings finished the half shooting 40.7 percent (11 of 27) while hitting just 2 of 6 from 3-point range. Augustana made its hay at the free throw line in the first half hitting 14 of 16 from the line while Wayne State took just five foul shots in the first 20 minutes.
 
Jansen continued his hot-hand early in the second half scoring two quick buckets as the Vikings opened up on an 8-0 run to take a 44-36 lead forcing an early Wayne State timeout. Wayne State answered with 3-pointer by Kendall Jacks but the Vikings next three baskets came from 3-point range, including two straight by Jansen, and the Vikings took their largest lead of the night at 55-41.
 
Augustana continued to build on the lead, extending its run to 25-8 over the first 7:40 of the second half taking a 63-44 lead with 11:22 remaining in the game.
 
The Vikings continued to push their lead, stretching it to 25 with four minutes to play after Jansen hit his ninth and 10th free throws of the night to make the score 87-62.
 
The Vikings will now turn their attention back to non-conference play as Augustana will host Valley City State on Wednesday night at the Elmen Center at 7 p.m.
