SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – Daniel Jansen scored 26 points and became the 30th member of the 1,000-point club in Augustana men's basketball as the Vikings won their seventh straight game with an 86-61 win over Valley City State University (3-4) on Wednesday night at the Elmen Center. No. 19 Augustana improved to 7-0 with the victory. Tonight's game was an exhibition contest for VCSU.
Jansen has now scored 1,008 career points in 68 games in a Viking uniform. Jansen registered his second double-double of the season (10th career) adding 11 rebounds on the night. He registered his fourth 20-point game of the season (16th career) and hit 11 free throws marking the second straight game with 10 or more made foul shots.
Alex Richter pitched in with a career-high 24 points on 7 of 10 shooting (3 of 4 from 3-point range) for the Vikings.
Casey Schilling finished with 13 points, nine rebounds, two blocks and two steals while
Adam Beyer grabbed six rebounds and dished out six assists.
Augustana finished the game shooting 43 percent (25 of 58) from the field, while connecting on 11 3-pointers and shooting 61 percent from behind the arc. Augustana has made 10 or more 3-pointers in a game three times this season.
Valley City State started out the night on fire from the field connecting on its first seven shots of the game, including hitting 3 of 3 from 3-point range to jump out to a 17-9 just under five minutes into the game. VCSU extended its lead to 10 at 19-9 before the Vikings started chipping away at the lead.
Valley City State answered right back taking its largest lead of the night at the eight minute mark of the first half going in front 24-11 on Jayden Ferguson's fourth 3-pointer of the first half. Ferguson finished the first half with 16 points, going 6 of 11 from the field (4 of 5 from 3-point range).
Austin Saugstad answered Ferguson's 3-pointer with one of his own sparking an 18-8 run over the next seven minutes that saw the Vikings get within at three at 32-29 with just under five minutes to go in the half.
Four free throws and a Schilling 3-pointer later, Augustana held a 39-38 lead at the half as the Vikings went in front of VCSU for the first time since the opening minute of the game.
Valley City State cooled off as the half went on and the Viking defense became stingy. Augustana blocked four shots in the first half as VCSU ended up shooting 51.7 percent in the half, hitting 6 of 10 from 3-point range.
Augustana shot 43.5 percent (10 of 23) from the field in the first half while going 6 of 9 (66.7 percent) from 3-point range. Schilling led the Vikings with 13 first-half points, followed by Jansen's 11.
After gaining the one-point halftime lead, Augustana never relinquished the lead jumping out to a 12-point lead just over five minutes into the second half. Richter scored back-to-back buckets for the Vikings, putting his team in front 60-48.
Augustana continued to build on the lead past the midway point of the second half, and eventually took an 18-point lead after
Zach Huisken threw down a two-handed dunk on the break off a Beyer dish that gave Augustana an 18-point 76-58 lead with just over six minutes to play. Huisken finished the game with five points and four rebounds to go along with one block and one steal.
Augustana will now have eight days off before returning to action on Friday, Dec. 5 when the Vikings travel to Manktao, Minn. to take on 14th-ranked Minnesota State at 8 p.m.
