BOX SCORESIOUX FALLS, S.D. – No. 2 seed Augustana soccer couldn't overcome severe winds and a motivated No. 7 seed Minnesota Duluth in a 1-0 loss of a quarterfinal match at the US Bank/Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Tournament on Wednesday. The Vikings' record fell to 14-5 on the year in defeat, while the Bulldogs improved to 9-9-1 with the win.
Augustana finished the match with a 15-12 shot advantage over UMD, losing its first match this year when outshooting its opponent (11-1).
The Vikings' loss keeps their all-time postseason wins total at zero (0-6).
Kailey Beatt scored the lone goal of the match, her first of the season, in the 39th minute of the first half.
Payton Pry, recently named All-NSIC first team, led Augustana with four shots, one on frame on Wednesday.
The Vikings' loss is the first this year at Morstad Field, snapping a nine-game winning streak the team had previously been on dating back to 2013.
Ashley Limmer made five stops in goal for Augustana.
Minnesota Duluth was also playing without its best player Maureen Stromont, who was named NSIC Offensive Player of the Year on Tuesday by the league.
In the first half, Augustana netted quick score into the wind early in the match that was called off because of an offsides on Pry on the play.
The Bulldogs had the wind to their backs for the first 45 minutes and were able to take advantage of it, with Beatt taking a blocked shot and firing it past Limmer into the back of the net to give UMD the 1-0 lead. Hannah Keill was credited with the assist on the goal.
Minnesota Duluth was able to control the rest of the half, taking a 1-0 advantage into the break.
The Vikings got their turn in the second half to play with the wind and had chances, getting up 10 of their 15 shots in the final 45 minutes of action.
A chip shot late by
Samantha Tymkowicz was Augustana's best chance at tying up the contest, but the Bulldogs' Marissa Rosa was able to get a hand on it and make the save, keeping the Vikings scoreless.
UMD would hold on to win 1-0, knocking out Augustana from tournament play.
The Vikings now will take a wait to see if they are selected for NCAA Central Region Tournament play, though they were ranked third in the latest NCAA Regional rankings that came out on Wednesday afternoon.
