WAYNE, Neb. – The Augustana College men's cross country team continued its dominance of the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference winning its sixth straight team championship on Saturday in Wayne, Neb. The Vikings women regained their spot at the top of the conference winning their sixth team title in the past seven seasons.
"We are extremely pleased with how our teams performed at the conference championships," head coach
Tracy Hellman said. "Championship teams require a lot of things to go right, but the biggest thing is a great team performance and we got that today."
On the women's side, Augustana and Minnesota Duluth tied in team points but the Vikings won the NCAA tiebreak to reclaim the conference crown after the Bulldogs stopped Augustana from winning its sixth straight NSIC women's title last season.
The Augustana men's team posted a near-perfect score of 22, placing five runners in the top seven, to secure their sixth consecutive NSIC title.
"It was a great team effort at a very important time,"
TJ Gleason said. "Our hard training these past few months have really paid off and I'm verry happy we could continue the winning tradition at Augustana."
Leading the way for the Vikings was
Harald Karbo, who placed second overall in the 8,000-meter race with a time of 25:15.23.
Adam Braun placed third with a time of 25:15.80 and Gleason delivered a fourth-place finish clocking a time of 25:17.26.
Keegan Carda delivered a sixth-place finish with a time of 25:26.51 and following closely behind was
John Klecker who placed seventh clocking a time of 25:26.83.
Glen Ellingson placed eighth with a time of 25:32.03 to give Augustana six out of the top 10 finishers in the race.
Nathan Hauge finished the 8k race in 25:42.60 to place 11th while
Nick Larsen finished 14th with a time of 26:03.66 on his way to NSIC Newcomer of the Year honors.
Logan Burns finished 26th overall with a time of 26:32.59 and
Adam Kost rounded out the list of runners for the Vikings finishing 47th with an 8k time of 27:04.51.
"I thought our men were as ready and focused as they ever have," Hellman said. "They were not going to let their conference streak end."
The Vikings finished 24 points ahead of second-place finisher USF. MSU Moorhead placed third followed by Minnesota State in fourth and Minnesota Duluth in fifth on the men's side.
In the women's race, the team score was determined by the NCAA tiebreak rule which compares the place finish of the five scoring members. It came down to the fifth runner and the Vikings were named the winner of their sixth NSIC title in the last seven seasons.
"I think we put together a tremendous effort, which we needed to do to come away with a championship,"
Annie Kruse said. "
Freshman Kruse was the highest finisher for the Viking women placing third overall with a time of 21:26.00 in the 6,000-meter race. Kruse was also named the NSIC's Newcomer of the Year after her performance.
Leah Sievert placed fifth overall with a time of 21:28.46 followed by
Meritxell Delgado who finished ninth overall in 22:00.25.
Kaitlyn Yoerg placed 14th with a time of 22:15.92 and
Cassidy Soli was the deciding factor in the team scoring with a 17th-place finish in 22:27.47 which was just two seconds ahead of Minnesota Duluth's fifth runner.

Emma Anderson who finished 51st clocking a time of 23:56.72.
Carly Bauer placed 60th overall with a time of 21:12.83.
"Winning the women's race in the way we did was truly remarkable," Hellman said. "We always stress the importance of team and how everyone counts, and that was evident today. We finished the last 1,000-meters with fire and it propelled us to victory."
Following Augustana and Minnesota Duluth in the team scoring was Winona State in third, U-Mary in fourth and MSU Moorhead who finished fifth.
Both men's and women's teams will have next week off before competing in the NCAA Central Region Championships Saturday, Nov. 22 back in Wayne, Neb.
