Vikings use big second half en route to win against Golden Bears

The Short Story: Augustana used a strong second half and some tough defense to limit the Golden Bears to just 59 points on 41.5 percent shooting from the field. Casey Schilling and Alex Richter led the Vikings with 14 points each.

How it happened
• The Golden Bears opened the game fast, taking a 15-7 lead through the first 7:39.
• Augustana would tie the game early in the second half after outscoring Concordia-St. Paul 26-18 over a 15-minute span at 33 all after a made 3 by Daniel Jansen.   
• Augustana's 28 points in the first 20 minutes, was a season-low points in a half.   
• A 3-pointer by Ethan Guske capped off a big 15-6 run a little over halfway through the second half that pushed the Augustana lead to eight at 48-40 with 7:01 remaining in the game.
• A layup by Richter with 2:28 left to play gave the Vikings their biggest lead of the night at 63-53.
• The Golden Bears would use a late 6-0 run to cut the Augustana lead to four at 63-59 with 16 seconds, but never came any closer than that.

• Schilling's nine rebounds on the night gave him his sixth game of at least eight rebounds in a contest this year, improving the Vikings' record to 6-0 in those games.
• Jansen had eight points in the game, a season low, snapping a three-game streak of at least 20 points in a game.
• Augustana's 65 points were a new season low for points scored in a game this year. The Vikings have now been held under 70 points only twice this season.
• Augustana got back to its dominant ways on the glass, out-rebounding Concordia-St. Paul 38-30. The Vikings are now 8-0 this year when they out-rebound their opponents.
• Richter delivered his eight double-digit point performance of the season finishing with 14 to go along with three rebounds and two assists.
• With the win, Augustana has now won the last six meetings against the Golden Bears.
• Adam Beyer had 12 points, his third game this year in double figures for scoring.
• Augustana tied its season low with six 3s made in the game.
• Augustana trailed at the half 29-28 to Concordia-St. Paul, only the second time all season that it is entered halftime trailing.
 
Up Next
Augustana returns home to play two NSIC games at the Sioux Falls Arena next weekend. The Vikings take on Bemidji State on Friday night at 8 p.m. Augustana closes out the homestand with a meeting against Minnesota Crookston on Saturday at 6 p.m.
