Viking women dominate, men fall one win short in season openers

LINCOLN, Neb
. - Augustana's men's women's tennis opened their spring season on Saturday at Nebraska Wesleyan with the women earning a commanding 9-0 win and the men falling 5-4, forced to forfeit three of their matches. The women now own a 1-0 record and the men drop their season-opener to arrive at a 0-1 record on the year.

No. 38 Augustana dropped just seven games in the nine matches, picking up where their dominating 2013 season left off. Four Vikings picked up double-bagel wins in singles and two doubles pairings shut their opponents out.

Katie Jesperson and Jessa Richards logged 6-0, 6-0 wins at Nos. 1 and 2 singles, respectively. Jesperson is ranked No. 5 in the Central Region and Richards owns the No. 15 ranking.

Making their Augustana debuts, Francesca Beg earned a 6-1, 6-3 win and Christine Olivo notched a 6-1, 6-1 victory. Beg played No. 3 singles and Olivo earned her win at No. 4 for the Vikings.

Heather Sullivan added another shutout victory for the Vikings, winning 6-0, 6-0 at No. 5 singles. Jenna Helleberg also blanked her opponent at No. 6 singles, taking her match 6-0, 6-0.

Jesperson and Richards showed off their Central Region No. 2 doubles ranking with a dominating 8-0 win at the first doubles flight. Sullivan and Olivo echoed the top Augustana doubles squad with an 8-0 win.

At No. 3 doubles, Helleberg and Meredith Lawrence logged their first doubles win as a pairing with an 8-1 win to secure the shutout team victory.

The Viking women embark on Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference play next weekend, welcoming the University of Sioux Falls on Friday, Feb. 7 at 6:30 p.m. and Upper Iowa on Saturday, Feb. 8 at 6:30 p.m. Both matches will be played at Sioux Empire Fitness.

Augustana won four of the six matches played, but forced to forfeit three matches handed the Prairie Wolves their first win of the year.

Jared Hofer and Jackson Buchanan gave the Vikings an 8-2 win at No. 1 doubles and Collin Noldner and Brock Baade took the No. 2 doubles match, 8-4. Augustana forfeited the No. 3 doubles match and held a 2-1 lead entering singles play.

Hofer finished with a perfect record on the day, taking down NWU's No. 1 singles player 6-0, 6-4 for the win. Noldner couldn't match Hofer's output and fell in three sets, winning the first 6-2, but then dropped the next two 6-2 and 10-8.

Buchanan took home another win with a three-set win at No. 3 singles. Buchanan defeated his Nebraska Wesleyan opponent 6-2, 3-6, 10-7. Baade played No. 4 for the Vikings but couldn't give Augustana the clinching win, falling 6-0, 6-4.

The Vikings forfeited the Nos. 5 and 6 singles matches, giving the Prairie Wolves a 5-4 team win.

Augustana's men's team now trips to Minnesota for matches against Saint John's (Minn.) and Grinnell on Feb. 8.
