Jackson Buchanan provided Augustana (2-4) with the only two wins of the day in a 7-2 loss to Hastings College (1-1) on Saturday evening. Augustana opened the season on a six-match road trip and now return to Sioux Falls, S.D. for their first home match of the year on Friday, Feb. 28 against Morningside College at 6:30 p.m. in Sioux Empire Fitness.
Buchanan picked up his fifth win of the season and fourth in a row in both singles and doubles on Saturday. With partner
Brock Baade, the No. 2 doubles pairing pulled out an 8-6 win, but the Vikings found themselves in 2-1 hole after the three doubles matches.
No. 1 singles player
Jared Hofer suffered just his second defeat of the year, a 6-1, 6-2 loss, putting the Vikings down 3-1. At No. 2 singles,
Collin Noldner lost a pair of heartbreaking sets, falling 7-6 (8-6), 7-5.
Buchanan then picked up his second win of the day, in thrilling fashion nonetheless. Dropping the first set in a tiebreaker, the junior from Mendota Heights, Minn. responded with a tiebreaker win of his own. In the super tiebreaker (first to 10 points) third set, Buchanan sealed the 6-7 (3-7), 7-6 (7-4), 10-5 win at No. 3 singles.
The rest of the Vikings would not be as fortunate, all losing in straight sets.
Colan Surratt was upended 6-2, 6-4 in the No. 4 singles match,
Brock Baade lost 6-2, 6-3 at No. 5 singles, and
Evan Richards fell in the No. 6 singles match 6-3 with one just set being played due to time constraints to give the Vikings a 7-2 defeat.
Augustana returns to Sioux Falls for their home opener against Morningside on Feb. 28 at 6:30 p.m. in Sioux Empire Fitness.
