Vikings cruise to 9-0 win over UMC on Sunday

- No. 38 Augustana's season-opening win streak to seven matches with a 9-0 win over Minnesota Crookston on Sunday morning. The Vikings dropped a total of seven games in the nine individual matches on to improve to 7-0 on the season, 6-0 in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference competition and the Golden Eagles fall to 1-5 overall, 1-5 in the NSIC.
 
Augustana opened with three dominating doubles wins to give them a 3-0 cushion in the match. Katie Jesperson and Jessa Richards notched their seventh win of the season, an 8-1 win at No. 1 doubles.
 
No. 2 doubles pairing Christine Olivo and Heather Sullivan picked up their own 8-1 win while Jenna Helleberg and Meredith Lawrence blanked their opponent 8-0 for the second straight match.
 
Augustana turned in equally dominant performances on the singles side, with no Viking allowing their opponent to win more than one game in a single set.
 
Jesperson and Richards each won 6-1, 6-0 at Nos. 1 and 2 singles, respectively, to ensure the Viking victory. Francesca Beg recorded her second consecutive 6-0, 6-1 win at No. 3 singles, giving Augustana their sixth win of the day.
 
At No. 4 singles, Olivo battled a slow pace of play to earn a 6-1, 6-1 win. Jenna Halleberg dropped just one game in the first set, before achieving a 6-1, 6-0 win in the No. 5 spot.
 
In the final match of the day, Lawrence remained perfect in singles on the year and has not allowed her opponents to win a game all year with a 6-0 , 6-0 win at No. 6.
 
The Vikings now head to Grand Island, Neb. for two important regional matches as they take on Northwest Missouri State on March 1 and Nebraska-Kearney on March 2.
