Women's tennis suffers first defeat of the season

- No. 41 Augustana dropped its first match of the season to NCAA Division I St. Joe's on Monday morning. The 9-0 loss puts the Vikings at 9-1 on the year while the Hawks improve to 2-4.

With singles matches starting the day, Augustana couldn't break through for an upset victory. Katie Jesperson suffered her first singles loss of the year, falling 6-3, 6-2. Jessa Richards was also dealt her first defeat of the season, losing 6-3, 6-1 at the second singles flight. 

Francesca Beg managed just one game in her No. 3 singles loss, 6-0, 6-1. Christine Olivo suffered similar fate, falling 6-2, 6-1 in the No. 4 singles match. 

Jenna Helleberg couldn't turn the tides for the Vikings with a 6-1, 6-0 loss. Meredith Lawrence came the closest to stealing a win, but the freshman fell 6-3, 6-3. 

Augustana slid their doubles pairing up one spot each and were swept by the Hawks. Top pairing Olivo and Heather Sullivan fell 8-0 to the No. 1 SJU tandem.

Helleberg and Lawrence suffered a pair of breaks to the St. Joe's second pairing in an 8-4 loss. Liz Lewis and Jessica Spalding were topped in the No. 3 match by an 8-1 margin. 
 
The Vikings have a day off tomorrow before taking on Robert Morris (Ill.) on March 12 at 9:30 a.m.
