PUERTO RICO - Augustana men's tennis snapped a three-match losing streak with a resounding 8-1 win over University of Puerto Rico-Mayaguez on Thursday afternoon. The Vikings improve to 4-7 on the season with the first win of their spring break trip.
 
The Vikings swept all six singles matches for the first time this season, leading them to a dominating win over the local UPR-M squad. Jared Hofer opened the match with a 6-2, 6-3 win at No. 1 singles, but three of the next five matches would go to three sets.
 
Collin Noldner recorded a first-set win, but was edged in the second-set tiebreaker. The junior then broke through for the second-flight singles win at 7-5, 6-7 (2), 10-7 by taking the tiebreak.
 
At No. 3 singles, Jackson Buchanan looked poised for a straight-set win after winning the first 6-3, but was then handed a 6-0 loss in the second. Buchanan struck back with a 10-5 tiebreaker win to give the Vikings a 3-0 lead in the team match.
 
Colan Surratt earned a 6-3 win in the first set of the No. 4 singles match before his opponent retired in the second to put Augustana one win away from securing the team match.
 
Brock Baade earned the decisive win for the team victory with an impressive 6-1, 6-0 win at No. 5. Evan Richards continued the Viking singles streak by edging his opponent in three sets.
 
Richards took the first set before suffering a late break in the second to force a super tiebreaker to decide the match. The lone freshman registered his third win of the season with match scores of 6-2, 5-7, 10-6.
 
Augustana then took two of the three doubles contests for their second 8-1 win of the year.
 
Hofer and Noldner teamed up for a close 8-7 (7-4) win at the top doubles spot. The No. 2 doubles match didn't swing in favor of the Vikings as Buchanan and Baade suffered just their third loss as partners this season. Surratt and Richards snapped their own three-match skid with an 8-3 victory.
 
The Vikings close their trip to the Caribbean with a 7:30 a.m. match against Puerto Rico-Humacao tomorrow.
