SARTELL, Minn. - Augustana's chances at a three-game winning streak were dashed in an 8-1 defeat at the hands of St. Cloud State on Saturday afternoon. The loss drops the Vikings to 5-8 on the season while the Huskies improve to 9-10 in 2014.
Jared Hofer and
Collin Noldner supplied the Vikings only win on the day, a tight 8-6 win at the No. 1 doubles spot.
Jackson Buchanan and
Brock Baade nearly gave the Vikings a second win, but they came up just short, losing 8-6 in the second spot.
Augustana then entered singles play in a 2-1 hole after
Colan Surratt and
Evan Richards suffered an 8-2 loss in the third flight doubles match.
Hofer and Noldner both played marathon singles matches, but were upended in three sets with both super tiebreakers needing extra points. Hofer's second-win hopes were halted in a 3-6, 6-2, 11-9 loss.
Noldner also went three sets in the No. 2 singles match, and was defeated in a seemingly never-ending third-set tiebreaker -- the Augustana junior fell 6-3, 5-7, 16-14.
Jackson Buchanan fought hard in the second set after losing the first, but came up short, 6-2, 7-5.
At No. 4 singles, Surratt suffered a straight-set loss , 6-3, 6-3 and
Brock Baade was handed a 6-0, 6-1 defeat.
Evan Richards couldn't break through in the sixth-flight singles match, falling 6-0, 6-2.
The Vikings return home for an April 6 match against Nebraska-Kearney before they host St. Cloud State in a rematch on April 11.
